All Apologies
Posted Monday, April 28, at 3:57 PM
To those whom I've so egregiously offended in my latest blog entries, I feel compelled to reply.
When one takes another's thoughts and words either too literally or even worse, too sarcastically, it exposes exactly what is troubling many small communities today. In my latest blogs, I've addressed the issues of non-acceptance and ignorance in our community and others. If they made you angry, they were supposed to. If they made you feel stereotyped and lumped into an undesirable human categorical heap, then they served their intended purpose. If you were uncomfortable being labeled and ridiculed, you have received an official taste of what people of color, or those who have alternative views on religion, lifestyle or politics feel every day of their lives in communities that are less than eager to accept those who are different. Please don't insult my intelligence by clamoring that not everyone is bigoted, hateful, ignorant, etc. and it's unfair to those who are not to be satirized and challenged. Is it unprofessional to expose societal ills? Certainly not. On the contrary, it is the professional duty of any decent journalist to bring them to the forefront. Anyone who knows me understands that I look for the good in people on a daily basis. While my entries may have been too much for you to take stylistically, they were calls for compassion, understanding and an honest moment of self-reflection. I certainly realize that Greencastle is a community with many wonderful, kind inhabitants. I also know that it, along with many other small communities, carries an undercurrent of hate and bigotry. I am not naive enough to believe that will ever change in our lifetime, but I'll certainly not be intimidated into repressing my thoughts to suit what I believe is the majority. Still angry? "Methinks thou doth protest too much."
Paradise Found! There's a place I've found where longing, dissatisfaction, hypocrisy, hate, isolationism and bigotry does not exist. My joy in this discovery is magnified exponentially by the fact that this place is my own adopted home town...Greencastle. I thank my lucky stars every day when I step out of my humble abode and am awashed in the true sense of harmonic utopianism that permeates our community...
Vive La Boheme (that's French) Here':s someting to ponder....Every year I show my students a handful of pictures of notable world figures including Mother Theresa, Ghandi, the current crop of presidential candidates, etc. along with a picture of Paris Hilton. You might think I'm exaggerating, but almost without fail, the only picture the students recognize is the benevolent Ms. ...
If You Build It, Britney Will Attack It With An Umbrella Well gosh Wally, as the Beaver used to say...reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated. I thunked I wasn't s'posed to work here no more, but crazy small-town circumstances have their way of usurping what appears to be reality. I'm back....na na na na na na na na na...
So Long, Farewell. Auf Wiedersehen. Adieu The big, bad, entity that is the American way of doing things has graciously informed me that I am expendable here at the beloved Banner. I'm certain that will delight some, and hopefully concern others. I'm reminded of "Old Blue Eyes" when he he said. "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere," in the most contradictory sense of the lyric...If a feller can't contribute to a small-town daily, I'm guessin' I overestimated my journalistic potential...
Don't Worry Hoosier Fans...Character's On The Way! I guess maybe I coulda told ya Kelvin Sampson might have a short stay in Monroe County. After all, he brings his song and dance from Norman, home of the same hallowed halls that produced the messianic Barry Switzer, countless inquirys into pesky, naughty little things like rapes by athletes, cocaine smorgassboards, academic anemia, graduation rates in the single digits in some programs, etc. But hey, they won a bunch, and did produce a role model everyone can be proud of, Brian Bosworth...
Top Ten Reasons Why Britney Needs A Spa Day 10. Too many carbs in the veteran's diet at Cedars Sainai psych ward. 9. Acetone a good, cheap buzz. 8. Colonic irrigation never hurt anyone. 7. One word - MuffinTop. 6. Childcare from literate providers a welcome respite for Sean Preston and Jayden James...
Some Things Defy Rationaliztion As an educator, I have interactions on a daily basis with students and parents from backgrounds as diverse as one can imagine, given the nature of our community. It truly never ceases to amaze me when I am constantly confronted with the generalized breakdown of a loving, respectful, nuturing family environment in today's society...
Dems Do Same Ol' Song And Dance Hola! I informed you a few weeks ago that my hope was to inspire some spirited debate among those in our community over issues both national and global. I've certainly inspired some discussion, albeit only peripherally related to the content of my earlier blogs, but I'll touch on that later in this communication...
Top Ten Reasons To Look Forward To 2008 10) Grieving process over Anna Nicole Smith gradually moving towards acceptance. 9) "Free Joe Horn" t-shirts not quite the novelty they once were. 8) Finally get to break out the Bush Countdown Calendar 7) Brittney easing into the "Rubenesque" mode pretty darn gracefully...
