You like me, you really like me!

Here':s someting to ponder....Every year I show my students a handful of pictures of notable world figures including Mother Theresa, Ghandi, the current crop of presidential candidates, etc. along with a picture of Paris Hilton.

You might think I'm exaggerating, but almost without fail, the only picture the students recognize is the benevolent Ms. Hilton. I tend to believe our job as educators, journalists, etc. is to make the populace at least aware of what is going on around them globally and nationally (Failed as charged, obviously).

I'm not dogging my students, mind you, they are only exposed to what they see within the confines of their familial domeciles.

I challenge you to to do the same thing with your local city council, school board, law enforcement agencies, etc, and see what the results would be, If I were a betting man, I'd wager to say you'll find similar results.

Life exists outside of our midwestern bubble, and personalities of worthiness emerge from things other than Dancing With the Stars. Read a book; watch the news as long as it's not Fox, and tell your children we live on Earth, not just two miles south of the nine-mile stoplight. Yesterday, I read a Speak Out that was one of the most incomprehensible, grammatically mangled "tributes" to John Dillinger, hailing him as some sort of saintly devotee to the downtrodden. If this is what is on the mind of the "average Joe" in this county, we're "buggin" and need a county-wide delousinng. Love and Peace

I could not agree more! The main problem with this world today is that people are dumbified into thinking that everything is OK and it is not! I guess what really gets me is that there are more of us then there are of them so why dont' we stand up for ourselves? A question that may never be answered.

Mr. B as an educator, are you pressing for our school corporation's to teach more in depth American history classes in all grades, to bring back the required in depth Civics class, the required in depth Senior Government class? I know I took Civics as a requirement in my Freshman year. I had Senior Government in 1984-1985. My junior year history class was World history. I was also taught American history as a class in my sophmore year, as well as being taught about it in all other general history courses throughtout the 12 years in school. As a parent and legal citizen of this country I feel it's imparitive for our future generation's to know and understand the founding of America. Also to know the Constitutional roles of our Government. To understand and know the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

There is a book out there titled " Dumbing Down America" not quite sure but I think that is the title, it gives significant insight into what is happening in Americas' schools and why. The news reported the other evening the average graduation rate in Indianapolis schools is only 30%. I wonder what all that money is going for, certainly not education.

Bondsman, I know what book you're talking about and I think that is the title too.

Our politician's, CEO's, school adminstrator's, most of the media, and other "top" (the mega rich) people don't want American's to know the truth or their (legal citizen's) power they really hold. Due to the fact that We the People would stand up and rebell against the bullsh*t unConstitutional laws they have brought upon us. Also the destruction of America they have caused and still causing.

A revolutionary war in this country is the only saving grace We the People have. God is not against war that is for saving the morals, freedoms and livelyhood of his people. Which is what this country was founded on

All the money is going to the salaries of administrator's, principal's and other staff. The average salary for a superindentant is over 100 grand a year. Principal's are making 100 grand or just a little under that.

Anonymouseater, one semester of these classes at one hour daily is barely enough time to really learn indepth what a "future voting adult" needs to know how the Government is supposed to work and the limitation of power they Constitutionaly really hold. There are a lot of school district's in this country that have even less of a requirement than North Putnam does.

Paris is probably the photo that I would not recognize, however I could have guessed that one.

What is needed besides the education is a balanced view of the government and what they are really doing. Our elected officials and candidates are only taking polls to find out how to not answer questions but to appear to answer them. We need real answers!

Somebody needs to ask the hard questions and help keep our government headed in the proper(not left or right)direction. Our legislators spend months and millions dealing with things that don't amount to a hill of beans.

Part of this process should include our journalists and our local government officials. Instead, we seem to worry about home heating systems and smoking in restaurants. Not much is being done to deal with the economic forces that are affecting our daily lives.

I couldn't agree with you more. Kudos, indeed!

Keith, finally, a blog from you that my little brain can understand. I used to think that you had a secret fixation on the likes of Btit Spears and Paris Hilton. Now I can read the satire in your article. I have long believed that our media is creating a nation of idiots who will, in the future, need to be told what to think and do by way of TV commercials and (un)reality shows.

As far as the FOX network goes, how can a Republican driven media criticize Democrats for being so liberal and produce shows like Family Guy and American Dad? I'm not uplifting any other network or bashing the Republican party. It's a legit question.

I agree with your concern on who our kids look up to. The media is no help and our kids may only be watching what their parents are tuned into.

Except for Fox? What kind of wierd statement is that? "Expand your minds but only in a way I approve of."

I tend to watch Fox at home and CNN is running at work. Frankly they report the same kinds of stuff. The only real differnce seems to be that CNN tends to spin left while Fox tends to right. And even then they have both gotten better about reducing the amount of spin. Just because Fox has a different point of view doesnt make their broadcast toxic. Perhaps you should take your own advice and expand your horizons.

By the by. As for the question you would have proposed to me. I would have known who the presidential canidates were and who Ghandi was. I know who Mother theresa is but I've not seen very many pictures of her to commit her to memory. Paris Hilton I know jack about. I know she was in the news recently concening some jail time. that is about it. I don't really even know why she is famous.
