How Green is Greencastle Supplemental

The environmental story I wrote is something that is very dear to me. I interned with the Sierra Club of Ohio briefly and when I heard Mayor Murray speak at the Rotary Club meeting last Thursday about how Greencastle was using LED stoplights, I came up with the idea for the How Green is Greencastle story. What I found while conducting interviews with Shannon Norman and Dr. Everett was that there was incredibly too much information to be included into one story. Thus, I've decided to write a blog with additional information, links, and my opinions on things.

To begin, people need to understand that these initiatives and programs are imperative to the future. I chose to focus the story on the impact of wasted money because it is more important to most than telling them about declining air quality, melting glaciers and all that we hear and read in the media lately. The programs are readily available and can be enacted by anyone at any time. As I mentioned in the story, these programs generally do cost money, but the Putnam County Community Donation gives out money for such things. There are also governmental grants available for building retrofits. If the programs don't exist, we can start them. It would also be good to suggest to Mayor Murray to look into the Mayors Environmental Agreement.

It is easy to feel overwhelmed by all the information coming at us regarding this. Basically some may feel their way of life is being challenged and that isn't the case. Even small changes such as using CFL light bulbs (which is going to be mandated by the Federal Government soon) or low VOC paint to improve indoor air quality end up making a large difference. We are at the point where the days of thinking recycling programs such as those that can be found outside all Greencastle Community Schools for paper (the bright bins outside all the schools is for paper recycling, when the company comes to collect the paper, they pay that school for however much paper is collected, a great way to recycle and support the individual schools) are for granola eating people from Portland. The curbside service offered in Greencastle is also great. It is included in the trash pickup, the bins are free and can be found at City Hall. A county wide recycling program has not yet been devised though.

Another thing to consider is that poor quality of air causes people to go to the doctor, thus prompting a drain on healthcare. Those of us who are Environmental crusaders are no out to steal anyone's freedom, so the idea "whatever you're for, I'm against" needs to be tossed in the recycling bin. The imaginary political line on environmentalism should also be thrown there since this affects us all, no matter if you are republican or democrat, rich or poor, or whatever other black/white argument can be raised.

A great deal of these ideas came from my discussion with Dr. Everett, who is a wonderful source for anyone interested in making a change but doesn't know how to go about it. She also says that sustainability can create jobs. This is a great thing in the time of economic uncertainty, soaring unemployment, and a dire environmental situation. Why not create jobs and save the environment in one brave, erudite move?

I will add links now for people to consider looking at if they are interested. Any questions please feel free to ask as well. kcrafton@bannergraphic.com.

DePauw facilities director, Ted Fares tedfares@depauw.edu, would be glad to talk about all of the specific measures he's taking with buildings at Depauw.

Whether for this story or the next, you should definitely get in touch with Stacie Stoffregen (sstoffregen@greencastle.k12.in.us) from Greencastle Middle School. They are planning a *big* community event much like the one we had in January. Here's the event page http://www.depauw.edu/univ/sustain/ftn/i... for what Depauw did.

Here's the national site: http://www.focusthenation.org/focus2008.....

These came directly from an email Dr. Everett sent me.

I also need to mention that Greencastle does have a watershed program in place called MS4 that has to do with drainage water. It goes through a natural filtration system of native plants before being distributed into the tributaries. You can recognize these by the fish on the particular drain.

True, I believe that Global Warming is happening and I do think we play a part in it. To what extent, I'm not sure.

I meant that since I believe it to be true, I can talk and talk about it to someone who doesn't believe and chances are they still will not believe. It will take something drastic to change their way of thinking and by that time it will be too late.

I think we should move away from oil as soon as possible but I don't see that happening. Too many major people are getting rich from it, so it's not a high priority. I don't believe we should be dependant on outside sources for something like that. Having said that, I don't want my statement to be misconstrued and one think I believe that we should be drilling for oil here. Leave our wildernesses alone.

I just think we should do our part to take care of what we have and protect the land so we can enjoy it in the future.

I think you agree with me on part of the issue at least.

Actually is it NOT. One side thinks it's happening, one does not. It's an argument that will not be decided once it's too late to do anything about it.

It has nothing to do with government, it has to do with individuals stepping up and being responsible for THEMSELVES. Recycling would be a start.

And I'll let you in on a revelation about thejoker; I am not a democrat. SURPRISE!

"It's not about whether the warming issue is true or not..."

Well, actually, it IS.

Dems floor me, they blame everyone else BUT THEMSELVES.

How about we work on finding alternative fuel sources instead of fossil fuels? Crazy concept I know.

The only problem with that would be it would dry up the bank accounts of a lot of wealthy Americans. That is the real reason we don't pursue it as hard as we should.

People are called crazy if they say the earth is warming but people can say that it is a "natural progression of life" and that makes sense? And it has nothing to do with being liberal; it has to do with having a conscience.

It's not about whether the warming issue is true or not, it comes down to respect for the planet. I would like for my great-great grandchildren to be able to enjoy all the beauty the world has to offer.

Grow up and be responsible.

Kevin - you must enjoy $3.25 gasaoline. If the environuts would back off a little we could perhaps use the oil reserves in our country. I just hope that the liberal trend to look for ways to tell us how to live and to convince us that they know best falls on its face like it normally does.

Well, well, well gotta love people trying to tell me what is right and or wrong for me. People like you are what is wrong with America today the crusaders for so called truth or justice and the good ole American way. Do you even realize that the supposed GREEN aspect of life actually hurts us? Do you realize that Global Warming is a fraud or that Al Gore is an idiot? The warming of the Earth is due to natural progression of life, come on people get your head out of the clouds and grow up

Keep waving that global warming flag like a good lemming Kevin. Just another "crusader" not looking to take away freedoms, but inform the unenlightened masses how to live their lives, to make themselves feel better. Or the more likely goal, plain old control. Tell the people up is down long enough and eventually they'll believe you. It's not your fault though, you're spoon fed this stuff by the "unbiased" media, and most likely, your political party.

Brand me as an anti-environmentalist, but I do understand a need to protect the planet from things such as toxic dumping into our water supplies perpetrated by big business (China, you listening?), and the massive loss of usable acreage for growing crops, but you'll most likely NEVER sell me on the idea of "MAN MADE global warming." Just the topic du jour of the left, a way to rally the demonstrators. A naturally occuring warm spell in the planetary heating/cooling cycles I can believe. How long ago was it they were proclaiming the next ice age??? Where did those people go? And don't give me the "rebound effect" line. Convenient excuse.

Lets keep focused on real issues like poisoned water, starving to death from lack of food, and other REAL issues. CO2 emissions? Are you serious? You do know plants NEED CO2, right?

The planet WILL survive. Humans may not, but the planet shall. Nature will find a way. Maybe we should look at helping each other.

God bless.

Kevin Crafton's response:
You are absolutely right. Plants do need CO2 in order to survive. Plants ingest CO2 and expel Oxygen, animals do the opposite which helps proliferate the circle of life popularized by The Lion King.

However, lack of food and poisoned water seem to be imbued into this whole muckity-muck known as the human impact on the planet which is sometimes termed as environmentalism.

Your last point was also very prolific and true. The world will generally survive, if you don't take into account the impact that humans have had on the future of the environment due to toxic gases that will eventually explode when cooling agents are no longer in place to keep them in gaseous form, not to mention nuclear waste that sits in cooling pools that must be maintained, but all that aside the world is quite well at caring for itself. However, there are some of us who enjoy life and the beauty of the world and wish to continue to live and have others offered the same opportunity.

Being a humanitarian is a great idea, but there is more to the world then simply humans. As you said, plants need CO2, and humans need plants, so if there are no plants due to deforestation for parking lots and all other things mentioned in groovy 60's songs, then there will be elevated CO2 levels that the remaining plants can't handle. If you need a metaphor for this, think of putting your mouth on a fire hose and getting a drink, you need water to survive right?

It is often hard to accept responsibility for our own actions, but being the mature folk we are, we will realize that the benefits of admitting blame will be far greater than the consequence of lying, covering up and generally believing the past is the present and the future will be no different.

why, when something is good for the bottom line and good for the envirnment, is there a 10,000 dollar permit fee associated with it's implementation (aka-corn fired boiler) ??

You just made my point in my comment to your story for me.
