Reunion Time

Weekend after next, I'm going to my high school reunion.

A group of people who graduated from Quincy High School in Quincy, Michigan in 1988 are getting together.

The last time we had a formal "reunion" was for our 10th in 1988. This is more of a casual, low-key affair. We've been out of school for 21 years, and a bunch of us reconnected via Facebook, so we decided to get together on our alma mater's homecoming weekend.

It's funny, because I've been talking to people I didn't hang around with at all in high school. When you're a teenager, your group of friends tends to be very insular, with no one really getting in or out. I mean, there were 89 people in my graduating class, so it's not like I didn't know everyone ... but I didn't really *know* everyone.

But now I've been talking to my classmates as adults, and it's just different. We have careers, most of us have children. Some of us never left Quincy, others of us as as far-flung as the West Coast.

One of my classmates is a doctor. One is a state trooper. Another is a manager at Wal-Mart. Yet another is a tattoo artist.

What an eclectic bunch we became!

Thing is, looking back, I really couldn't have guessed who would become what. I always knew I wanted to be a writer someday, but I thought I would do some acting first and then settle down and write novels.

Funny how having children and needing to support them alters your dreams.

I'm really looking forward to seeing my classmates and finding out what they've been up to.

What a great thing to have a second chance to make new friends.
