Come on Hollywood get it right

Posted Monday, May 4, 2009, at 8:12 PM

The summer blockbuster movie season began on Friday with the opening of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and to my surprise and disappointment, it was horrible.

Now this isn't the first time that Hollywood has gone and jacked up another great story, and it seems to always be the comic movies that get done wrong. I know movie scripts usually don't follow the original story and I'm fine with that. The production companies have to add some extra flair or drama to the story and that's expected, but what they did to the Wolverine's origin story is unacceptable. They left out key parts of his past and the movie makes his past, look even spottier that what it actually is.

And to make matters worse, they changed the roles of the characters in the story as well. Take Sabertooth, for example, they have him being Logan's (Wolverine's) half brother. Now I'm pretty sure they were never related in the comic. In fact, they were mortal enemies because Victor Creed (Sabertooth) kills the woman the Logan loves, Silverfox, and Wolverine always tries to kill him when he sees him.

Then there was Dead Pool, the smart mouth mercenary who everybody loves to hate. He was in the movie and in the beginning he was a solid character, but they messed him up also. They had his ability as some kind of super fast, sword swinging killer. One scene, within the first 10 minutes, they had him walk into a room full of guys with machine guns and deflect every bullet shot at him with swords. I mean, his swords were moving so fast that you couldn't see them. Then in the end, they have him as some kind of super mutant who had blades coming out of his arms like Barraka from Mortal Kombat. They messed his character up so bad, it wasn't even funny. The truth of the matter is, that the only power the Dead Pool had was a healing factor like Wolverine.

I could go on and on about how bad Hollywood messed up that movie and disappointed so many fans, but I'm not going to.

This isn't the first time that Hollywood has done this. It took them three times to get the Punisher storyline right, two times to get the Hulk right and they are still working on the Spider-Man series. Hollywood did do a good job on the Fantastic Four movies and the first two X-men movies. The third one had good intentions, but I don't think it held up to the hype.

Origins was a big letdown for me and has shaken my belief that Tinsel Town can honestly bring some of these comic stories to life. I honestly think that if they are going to continue to do live action comic movies, then they need to stick to the actual comic books or maybe they should try hiring the writers who actually wrote the comics to pen the screenplays for these movies. Then it might not take them two or even three times to get the story write and make a solid movie.

I just hope that the new Terminator, G.I. Joe and Transformers movies live up to the hype or this could be a very boring summer at the movies.

I think the biggest mistake they did was casting Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine. I like Hugh, he is a great actor, but he is nowhere near the right man to play this role. Wolverine is short, only 5' 3" tall and a helluva lot bulkier. Wolverine is canadian. Where is the accent? Jackman is Australian. He uses an American accent in the movies. Could he not learn a Canadian one. At least have him play hockey. I will give then credit for showing that his claws were natural bone and then had adamantium added later with the rest of his skeleton.
