It's time for a playoff system

For the past couple of years people have said, and I am one of them, that the BCS series in college football needs to go the way of the Dodo and a playoff system needs to be implemented in Division I college football. Division III has it and Division II has it, but for some reason Division I doesn't have one, mainly because of the money that is involved in the bowl games that these colleges play in. Well, that all might change.

A lawyer representing the Mountain West Conference and the Utah's Senator have asked the justice department to look into the BCS system for violation of Anti-Trust laws. Now for you wondering how that has anything to do with a playoff system, it's because the same schools and programs are always in the national title game every year. It's either Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma or any other big major program no matter what their record is.

For example, last year the national title game involved two teams that had one loss each, while Utah went undefeated in the regular season and demolish Alabama in a bowl game. The reason that is important is because up until the SEC championship, the Crimson Tide was the No.1 team in the nation. Florida barley beat the Tide and Utah smashed them and they still couldn't get a shot at the national title. The same thing happened to Boise State a couple of years ago; they had a perfect season but weren't considered for the title.

The other thing that the people in Utah are arguing that some conferences get automatic bid into BCS bowl games and get more revenue than other conferences get. So basically they are arguing the BCS system is monopolizing college football and I think they are right.

The last time that a mid major school was in the national championship game was back in 1984 when BYU played in it and that was before the BCS system. Now I understand that before the BCS system, the way the NCAA declared its national champion was horrible, but I think the BCS has run its course and some schools are taking advantage of it. The BCS is a better system than what the old one was, at least with the BCS we don't teams sharing the national title, but it's time for a new system -- a playoff system.

They should take the winner of each conference and put them in a playoff system, and the one who wins it all is the national champion. It's not like they don't have the time to do it. There is usually a two months between the last regular season game and the national championship game. So instead of waiting around they could be playing in the playoffs.

I doubt that anything will come from the government looking into the BCS system. The major schools seem to be happy with the BCS as long as it works in their favor. Florida's head coach, Urban Meyer, said two years ago when the possibility of Michigan and Ohio State playing a rematch for the national title, that if they those two teams meet up then the college presidents should disband the BCS, but he got his wish and played in the title game and he never said anything else about it. It is going to really take something drastic for changes in the BCS to happen, but hopefully when something does, a playoff system is one of the changes.

A BCS playoff would make the month of December exciting to watch football. NFL winding down, and the BCS heating up. A football fan's paradise! I think we would see a few surprises make it to the semi finals and you never know who would be in that championship game. Several factors are never mentioned in how Utah annihilated Alabama. Those include that Utah was upset they weren't selected to play in the title game and played their bowl game with a chip on their shoulder (and rightfully so). Alabama got beat in the SEC championship game and lost out on a chance to play for the national championship. Since they had a month off between the SEC championship and the bowl game, they could never regain their groove and Utah had an entire month to be mad at the world and prepare for Alabama.

NCAA basketball tourney is about the money also. What Dan is trying to say is that you have coaches and media members selecting teams to be in the championship game. It's the only college sport that allows this. All the others have a playoff to determine who the best team is and D-1 football should do the same.

I have read some of your stuff and this happens to show your utter ignorance of anything to do with sports.
