So as I was watching Purdue take on the Ducks last night, or early this morning whichever one you want to call it, I witnessed a call that just made my blood boil.

Purdue just tied the game and went for the two-point conversion and nailed the pass, while the receiver was in the air in the end zone. The Oregon defender pushed the Boilermaker receiver out of bounds and the refs ruled the pass incomplete, and my mouth just dropped. Because of the no force out rule, the ruling stood.

I have had this on my mind since the game and I can't figure something out -- why is it that when a running back goes for a touchdown and jumps into the air to have the ball break the barrier and gets bulldozed out of bounds, does the touchdown count? His feet never entered the end zone, but his touchdown counts. But if you are a receiver you have to plant both feet (one foot in college) in the end zone for it to count. No matter if you are in the air and in clear sight holding the ball that broke the barrier, you still have to have your feet land in the end zone, but a running back doesn't to be in the end zone, he just has to have the ball break the barrier.

I don't understand why they rule it that way, but I think it needs to change, because it's bull crap. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. I have seen many games changed from that ruling and I think it should be changed.

If that rule was changed, I think Purdue would have pulled the upset and be in the top 25 this week, but they got hosed. But at least I can say that Purdue silenced a lot of critics in their showing Saturday night. Everyone thinks that Purdue is going to be horrible team this year, but I don't think so. If they can hold their own with Oregon, who some thought could be a national championship contender, then I think they can hold their own with anyone in the Big Ten. Michigan will be a tough one because we play them in the Big House this year and the Ohio State game will be tough. But I think the Boilermakers will have a strong showing and just might pull off a win or two.

As long as they don't get shafted by that Bull Crap rule again.

First of all, no one got hosed. Next, I can assure you that rule has worked out to the Boiler's favor a time or two in the past. Now, onto some context.

Rules are rules. Since the instant replay was not around when people started playing football the rules were developed to be easily officiated from the field.

It's easy to tell from the field if a runner breaks the plane or not with the ball and there is no gray area in that issue.

However, when it comes to a receiver and the "force out" rules, they are difficult to enforce and introduce an element of human judgement, in other words a gray area, into the outcome of the game. It is much easier to judge a reception by stating the receiver must come down within bounds with control of the ball--rather than add all kinds of exceptions and other nuances that make it more difficult to officiate.

Fast forward to today, and yeah, we have instant replay and all, but who wants to watch every reception near the sidelines or end zone be reviewed because the receiver may or may not have been forced out? No one. Its just a heck of a lot easier to keep the rule how it is and let the game be. It will work out to your advantage sometimes, and sometimes it won't. That's why we call it a game.

To be honest, this blog really reminds me of playing golf. In golf, the rules are it, plain and simple. No replays, no nothing. Say you are playing a pal in a little $10 game, or whatever. Your on the last hole, all tied up, and hit this beautiful tee shot right down the middle, then your pal comes up and duck hooks one that looks like its going out of bounds. All good, game over, right? Wrong. You take the cart up and your ball is nowhere to be found and your pal's is lying right in the middle of the fairway by some grace of God. Game over, you lose.

The better player/team doesn't always come out on top. There's no point in getting upset over rules that have been in place for ages that most likely have also benefited those that happened to get the short end of the stick that day.

Some days you get lucky, some you don't.

WOW, once again another bout of ignorance on your part. My God dude you are the stereotypical Purdue fan, when they win they brag to much and when they lose they cry like a 2 years old. Grow the hell up
