Wilson's Words -- A new opportunity
Wilson's Words -- introduction to a new staff writer
By Nick Wilson, Staff Writer
Coming to Greencastle has been quite the experience for me.
And if you're wondering who that "me" is -- my name is Nick Wilson.
Born in Lafayette and raised in Darlington (with a life centered-around Crawfordsville), my three-pronged life deposited myself into Greencastle this week for an all-new experience.
The Basics
I am a 2005 graduate of North Montgomery High School and, with the loving support of my family and friends, went back to college to seek a better life in 2012.
Have I found it? I like to think so.
I've worked in construction, manufacturing, information technology and now -- newspapers; the latter of which has delivered a satisfaction that I, personally, have not been able to find elsewhere.
Work History
I began working with the Journal Review in Crawfordsville as a sports reporter for my first official job in the newspaper industry. I then accepted the position of Sports Editor at The Paper of Montgomery County, but soon realized my true love in the news-world was mainstream media.
Sports have been a huge part of my life, as I played football, basketball and baseball throughout and through my high school years. Writing about these "life-celebrations" (as I like to call them) was a natural-fit, but something was missing.
Obsessed with the BBC, I may now technically qualify as what you would call a "news junky"; I wake up every morning and check the BBC-app to keep up with the current times. Conflict areas are of particular interest, as the United States protects its interests around the globe. Basically, I like to see what my tax-dollars are doing when they leave the country.
Friendly Residents
With this mentality, and after reading a plethora of mainstream news-articles for quite some time, I began to realize my true love was to simply report the news, whether the topic was sports, fairs, pancake breakfasts or town hall meetings. Having experiences in said-fields throughout Montgomery County has prepared me to enter Putnam County at the Banner Graphic with a full head of steam.
So far, and being from Crawfordsville, I have noticed some differences between the two towns. Crawfordsville, with a population of nearly 16,000, possesses roughly 50-percent more residents than Greencastle. However, I've found that a city's size walks hand-in-hand with corruption. Greencastle, most simply put, has accepted me with open arms and has made me feel welcome in a town where the amount of people I knew equalled zero, doing so with genuine smiles and positive attitudes that ultimately supersede the status-quo.
Wrap Up
In closing, I would like to say that I feel a new-found ability to "breathe" in Putnam County and Greencastle. As the world turns -- it changes. As the world changes, familiarities evaporate.
But I've found something familiar in Greencastle in the presence of like-minded people and genuinely friendly faces -- two things I've been missing in Montgomery County.
