Cloverdale cabin project completed

This week, I received the latest update from Ken Eitel with the Putnam County Heritage Preservation Society, concerning the log cabin at Cloverdale. He sent me a nice photo of the recently completed cabin located in the Cloverdale Community Park. Wow! This is a community project that everyone should be proud of, thanks to the efforts of numerous volunteers led by resident Lee Stewart. Volunteers began in the spring by dismantling the logs from the cabin that experts believe was built in the mid 1800s. Who would have thought that behind the layers of shingles one would find this jewel of the past? After removing the layers of shingles, old roof and numerous additions to the home, the original hand-hewn logs were revealed. Volunteers then moved the logs from their original location, about three miles southeast of Cloverdale, to the town park. All this happened in the matter of only a few weeks. Stewart told me, back in the spring, that he wanted to have the project done before he went to Florida for the winter. It looks like everyone pulled together and got it done. Since the project began, the various families who have lived in the home throughout the years stopped by to check it out, including Jack and Thelma Swope, Hank and Wilena Hankins and the family of Elnora Wood Crane. Crane lived in the home during the 1940s along with her aunt and uncle and more than a dozen cousins and siblings. The Hankins were the most recent owners of the cabin and donated it to the Preservation Society. The Swopes lived in the cabin during the 1950s and 60s. Stewart said the families were pleased with the progress of the project and happy the cabin was being preserved. If you haven't been to see the cabin, I'd recommend it. Also for anyone who is interested, the cabin will be officially dedicated on Oct. 13 during a ceremony at the Cloverdale park. All in the community are invited to attend.
