'Reality TV': love it or hate it

"Reality TV."
It seems to me that most people fall into one of two categories -- either you love it or you hate it. If you enjoy shows like "Survivor," whether you believe they are true reality or just as scripted as any episode of "Days of Our Lives," then you probably love it. If not, you probably hate it. That's fine. Change the channel and keep quiet about it. I, for one, tend to fall somewhere in the middle. I don't break out in a cold sweat if I miss the latest installment of "Wife Swap," nor do I go out crashing "American Idol" parties (Laurie Hardwick). My favorite reality show, if you want to call it that, of all time is "Amazing Race" and I was so excited this morning to hear on the radio that the season premiere is Sunday night. Unlike any show of its type, I am always excited to watch the next season. I used to be a closet "Survivor" lover, but I soon grew tired of see Mr. Joe "Hard Worker" booted out and Miss "I Think I Broke A Nail" backstab her way to victory. "Amazing Race" isn't like that -- for the most part. If you and your partner check in at the pitstop last, you're out. Plain and simple -- although a couple of seasons ago, the producers added a twist that on certain occasions, the last team to arrive is given a second chance. All they have to do is surrender their backpacks and money and they're allowed to go on to the next round. I like that. Anyway ... I love the thrill of the unexpected that comes with "Amazing Race," but most of all I love to see the different places the teams visit on their race for the grand prize of $1 million. Throughout the many seasons of "Amazing Race," teams have dug wells in the deserts of Africa, then raced on to ride a cable car up the side of the Alps. I think this makes the show very educational for the average American who has never gone beyond the border of his or her home state. Part of me wishes I could be on the show, but I'm honest enough to admit that I don't think I'd handle the pressure very well. I flew to Duluth, Minn., through Minneapolis International, a few months ago and missed my connection at Minneapolis. Oh my goodness. Do you know how big that airport is? I must have run from one side to the other about four times, trying to jump on this flight and that flight before I thought I was going to have a heart attack right there in front of everyone. I thought about throwing myself in front of one of those golf carts that race through the terminal and faking an injury so I could hitch a ride. But I didn't. The point is, an experience like that can really take the fun out of an otherwise pleasurable trip -- if you let it. Well I have trouble not letting it. I guess the best thing for me to do is watch it on TV this week. I hope they have some good teams this time -- and please producers, don't bring back Amber and "Boston Rob." I can't take it. |
