Let the snowflakes fly

Tis' the season for treacherous travel, slippery sidewalks and horrible weather forecasting.
I get so uptight this time of year when I watch the nightly weather forecast. If they say we're going to get a foot of snow, we get nothing. If they forecast flurries, we get buried. Why? This is why starting this week and continuing until … oh … May, I stop watching the weather report altogether. Eric Bernsee can tell you what I think about a particular "TV meteorologist" in Indianapolis … the guy always gets the "wrong" forecast. I think Andy Rooney said it best last year, during one of his nightly addresses at the end of "60 Minutes." The following is an excerpt from the original broadcast in March of 2007: "When the weathermen predict a foot of snow we get half an inch. If they call for four inches, we get a dusting that isn't even enough to shovel. You sweep it. I think meteorologists get bored with good weather. That's why they do that. I never remember any weather prediction that called for less snow than we ended up getting." Amen to that Mr. Rooney. So why can't the weather forecasters seem to get it right? I don't really know. But what I do know is that they rely on a computer to tell them what's going to happen … at least that's what I'm led to believe when they show the weather maps every night. They've even got a computer program that shows what a thunderstorm is going to do 30 minutes or an hour from now! What next? Ten days until a meteorite crashes into the earth wipes out half the population? Oh brother. I guess the great question would be why do we, as TV viewers, want to have such specific weather forecasting? Isn't it enough that we know it's going to snow? Do we need to know the exact inches? Judging by the cars that fly by my house during the worst of winter blasts, who cares how much snow we get? No one stays home anyway. Unfortunately, we live in a world that is moving so fast, no one wants to slow down. I fall victim to this myself … sometimes. But if I don't have to go anywhere, I'm not going to Kroger or Wal-Mart to browse the DVD section when there's a whiteout going on outside. Am I the only one who finds it wonderful to sit at home and watch the snowflakes fall gently on the lawn outside and be grateful for the fact that I don't have to get out in it? Anyway, have a good winter and if you're like me, don't stress out about the weather. Nature will take its course when and however it wants to. We cannot, and will never, control the weather. So why not sit back and enjoy it? |
