Economic stimulus my foot

So I'm excited about the economic stimulus package -- getting MY money back from the federal government -- until I hear that it's coming not by way of a check, but a credit/debit card. How chintzy is that?

Ever the saver, it looks like I'll have to spend the money even though I'd rather save it. So what do you readers think about it? How do you feel about the government essentially forcing us to spend our money?

This is the first I heard of the stimulus being given in debit/credit card form. What a load of crap! They (Fed gov't) aren't allowing us, the public, to use the money as we see fit. I too planned on putting the money into savings. Drats! Foiled again. Plus the expense of issuing millions of credit/debit cards to the public. Why can't they just deposit it into my account like my almost non-existant federal tax return.

Oh Big Brother, how I despise you...let me count the ways.

The idea is to stimulate the economy and you do that by spending. However, as you say, it is your money so an option would be to take the amount of money you spend on your tax rebate debit/credit card out of your checking account or pocket and deposit it into your savings account. Inconvienent yes, but allows you to do what you wish with your money.

well I suppose one could buy a savings bond, money order, or certified check with the card.......

You misunderstood. If you filed your 2007 tax return with a debit/credit to your bank account, then your stimilus payment will be directly deposited in the account you used for your taxes. However, if you paid taxes or receieved yor tax refund by mail in check form, then that is the way you will receive the stimilus payment.

I'm still trying to figure out how this is going to stimulate the economy as Wubya Bush thinks it will. Things are tough right now. Most of the stimulus check is going to be held onto or spent on past due bills probably. If they truly wanted to "stimulate" the economy cut the price of fuel in half and watch the economy rebound. Of course with Big Oil runing the White House and Congres that isn't going to happen. The "brainiacs" will keep trying to put a band-aid on a serious wound...

I agree with you calcans1, drop the price of fuel and families would have more money to spend.

With each election we have, our government gets worse.

Without a revolt we are doomed. Although the crooked, lying, piece of crap politician's we have, know We the People are fed-up. That's why they taking our right's away and making unConstitutional law's at rapid speed. They are training our military, and police officer's to turn against us. King George has went as far as signing a deal with the Canadian government to use their military force here, if he or future King's/Queen's here deems it neccessary.

Calcan & WONDER -

The only control government has over gas prices is the gasoline tax - which mostly goes to Highway/Road needs. (minus what is eaten by bureaucracy.) Unless you consider the lack of allowable drilling and the lack of refineries that is controlled by the government. (Which is a problem that has been around for a long time and is more the fault of the Dems in Congress than the current administration.)

Big oil is not running this country, any more than microsoft is running this country. Electric cars, hybrid cars, and diesels that run off of used vegetable oil are all out there. But they are expensive because of simple economics. Mass production lowers costs, but you will not get mass production w/o mass demand. And the people are yet to demand.

Also - keep in mind that the price of crude oil is often set by (or at the very least greatly influenced by) speculators on the commodities exchange. (Think NYSE)

Our current situation is b/c our entire economy is a house of cards and we just lost a few. (Learn about fiat money.)

As for our government getting worse - there is plenty of blame to go around. If you are really worried WONDER, I suggest you remain vigilant and keep your powder dry.

Might I also suggest a little brushing up on your Founding Fathers.
