I was making my way through Greencastle Friday evening at around 9 o'clock, which was just prior to the city setting off fireworks at Robe-Ann Park.

As I traveled west on the Southern Highway from Heartland Automotive, I began noticing all the cars collecting along the sides of the road, on side streets, in parking lots and just about anywhere a car would fit.

The lot in front of the middle school was nearly full. Cars had even nosed in at the entrance to the cement mill just down from the school.

At first I thought these people were crazy. Why didn't they just go to the park? But then it hit me as I saw people sitting in the backs of pick-up trucks, families gathered around bonfires in their back yards and scores of people filing across the busy highway to look at the fireworks ... isn't American a great place to live?

Think about it. We live in a country free from wars on our soil. We have a Constitution and a government that guarantees certain rights to every citizen regardless of race, gender, religious beliefs and more.

To me, that's what the fireworks are all about ... a celebration of our freedom as citizens of this wonderful place we call America!

One other thing: I was working at the office and outside couldn't help but notice the nearly constant pops and crashes of fireworks outside my window. Here in the United States, we don't even jump when we here those sounds. We're not even alarmed.

Think about other countries in the world where a pop or a loud boom sends people running for their lives. Imagine if a trip to the grocery store meant you might get gunned down in the street by a sniper hiding on top of a nearby building. What if you were sitting in traffic and the car next to you suddenly exploded, sending a fireball through the street and killing a dozen people around you? Worse yet, what if your child was among the dead?

All of these thoughts ran through my head tonight as I was driving around Greencastle seeing the excited faces of people on their way to watch the big show.

Take time to think about and like me, you may just appreciate your freedom a little more. You may not agree with all that's going on in the world today and I'll agree that mistakes have been made. But you gotta love America!

We live in a country free from wars on our soil. This is darn near the most ignorant comment I have ever read in a newspaper. There may not be troops running the steets and going house to house but there is a major war on this soil as speak, and if you are too ignorant to se it then wow I pity you as a small minded human being.

well i wish everyone could appreciate the country for what it is. no country is perfect but america is the second thing from it. i didnt get to watch fireworks cause im currently over seas. i did however get to see a 900 pound explosion to celebrate. it was a controled detonation. (not war related). but anyways i just wanted to say kudos on the blog and i know exactly what you mean. i really didnt know how great our country was til i came over here to iraq and saw how bad we could have it. and i would rather have wars on drugs than wars like the ones these people over here deal with everyday. nice blog

You should re-read the article. I agree with Joe_cope, and thank you for what you are doing. Maybe jaredscousin would like to join you over there. He seems to have a thick head. Go Adam, I enjoyed your short story. I get what you mean!!!!!

I to thought the fire works were great. But I drove thru the park around 8am Saturday morning and saw the LARGE amount of trash that was left behind. That was very upsetting to me. We do live in the greatest country in the world, but leaving that amount trash for someone else to clean up is totally WRONG!!!

I do not have a thick head I am a realist the war on these shores comes from the government and our president the IDIOT. The man is an imbecile and everyone knows it.

I know I am a couple months late reading this..but jaredscousin should feel so lucky that he has the freedom to speak his mind. He is probably one of those people that sit at HOME protesting the war. Not fighting for the freedom he uses everyday to bash America's leader. Not everyone believes the president is an idiot! Some, myself included, think he is doing what he feels needs to be done in order to keep us all safe. We as civilians do not know all there is to know about what is going on in the world. We know what the media wants us to hear. People like the president get the real, true information. Some people back the president's desicions, which by the way he isn't the only one making them, the way they backed the civil war and the revolutionary war. Sometimes war is unavoidable. We should sit around with our thumbs up our butts waiting on another terrorist attack? How would you be handling things if you were running the country? I sure am glad I don't have to do it. I applaud the president. He isn't perfect, but I believe he does the best he can. Anyone who thinks they can do better..step on up and give it a try!! They will be calling you an idiot next I am sure. Bc you can't please all the people, all the time! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND THE PEOPLE THAT FIGHT FOR IT!! Our president included!!!
