BCS -- How do I hate thee, let me count the ways.Posted Monday, November 26, 2007, at 12:09 AM
I would love to see college football go to a playoff system instead of this BCS junk. I don't understand how a team can lose a game early in the season and be automatically out of contention for a national title. I am a USC fan, so you might think that is the reason for my ranting but in reality it's not. You would give teams an opportunity to prepare for the postseason and give it their best. Some teams early in the season are still trying to find themselves and one game should not decide a team's season, especially when it happens in week two. Another positive effect of the playoff system would less time wasted. There would not be a two-month layoff for teams between their last game and their bowl game. I'm an avid watcher of Sports Reporters on ESPN Sunday morning and this was discussed just this morning. At the end of the program, John Saunders again voiced his love for the BCS system and why it makes sense. Too bad his rambling made little sense at all. It's good because it's good. That was basically his argument. I'm sure Saunders has more knowledge than I about certain things in the sporting world, but common sense tells anyone the BCS is at best a joke. Theory is one thing -- feasibility is another. Which is more exciting, the end of the NCAA basketball season or the end of the NCAA football season? When March rolls around, people get all jacked up, suffering from "March Madness" and live for almost a month on the edge of their seats. How many times have we seen a team from nowhere knock off someone who was thought to be in title contention? Even if it dosen't happen, that's what we hope and wait for -- the Cinderella team. Now let's move to football. The season ends, people are mad, you wait two months, watch two teams that couldn't beat a Peewee team and then it's over. The only aftereffect you have from the season is a bad taste in your mouth and a dream that the people in charge will do away with this ridiculous Bowl Championship Series. I think a playoff system would also renew interest in college football. I love USC but when they lost their game, I lost interest. I've watched and kept track of them but with a bystander's mentality. If they still had a shot at a national title, I would be much more involved. To my brethren in favor of a playoff scenario-- keep up the good fight. To those still in love with the BCS -- thanks for ruining college football. Amen Brother!!!!!!!!!! I totally agree, or you lose after going 9-0 and fall from #1 or #2 to 9th or 10th and out of a chance to play in the BCS, Scrap it now and let's have a playoff system.
