The Darkside cometh
This is a huge week in geekdom with the network debut of the Star Wars saga on Spike TV and since losing my beloved Star Wars room to the newest member of our household, I need this. I REALLY NEED THIS.
I used to be able to pop the door open and stare upon my collection whenever needed and now they're cold and alone in storage. My Millennium Falcon -- taken down. Darth Vader wall -- gone. Even my poster collection has been relocated, so a weekend of Star Wars will do me good.
My Star Wars DVDs are in heavy rotation, don't get me wrong, but seeing the flicks on TV; there's just something special about it. It takes me back to the good ol' days when the only way you could see the adventures of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie was on television. I still say I've seen the Biggs scene on TV. I know they say it didn't happen but I still believe.
Spike TV's advertising campaign for the Saga is one of the best yet -- a great trailer on its website and awesome outdoor ads. My favorite is the "Use only in case of Sith" bus stop ad. Great stuff, I tell ya.
Something else that I rediscovered after a long hiatus is The Force-cast. For those that don't know, The Force-cast is a weekly podcast from TheForce.net and Rebelscum.com and it is satisfying in every way. The hosts are Jason "Jedi Swank" Swank and Pete "Master Nadel" Nadel. I download the podcast and listen to it multiple times before the newest chapter is released. This podcast is the best Star Wars podcast out there. In addition to causing me to receive weird stares due to laughing out loud all by my lonesome, they deliver all the news that's fit to print. Well… you get the idea.
A segment that I find hilarious is their Billy Dee Williams quote of the week. I agree that Billy Dee was one of the smoothest cats in the galaxy but some of the quotes are horribly funny. "You Idiot!" For those of you who listen to the podcast, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you're a Star Wars fan you must check out The Force-cast.
Now on to my rant.
In an age where movies do just about anything to shock people, we have a studio that stands up and reedits a movie that has a subplot about a friend with cancer. The company is the Weinstein Co. and the film in question is Fanboys.
The original concept for the film was about a group of friends that attempt to break into Skywalker Ranch in to steal a copy of "The Phantom Menace" for a friend dying of cancer. Sounds like a flick that would be hilarious combined with a touching subplot -- just not to the Weinstein Co. They replaced director Kyle Newman with Steve Brill (Without a Paddle) and have cut out the cancer plotline (from what I've read). Now the friends want to get "The Phantom Menace" just to see it. This is the best they could come up with? You take a film that has heart and proceed to rip it out. Good job fellas, keep up the good work.
Well the clock is screaming at me to give it a rest so I will. Til we meet again -- May The Force Be With You.
