Wall*E, Wanted hit theaters Friday
In this installment of the Trailer Park will feature Pixar's Wall*E and Angelina Jolie's latest action pic Wanted. One review will be nice, one not so much; I'll let you guess which is which.
I'm a huge Pixar fan (George Lucas' creation) and I'm a huge Jolie fan (not a Lucas creation), so this was shaping up to be a very pleasurable experience researching the trailers for these films. Boy was I wrong.
Wall*E looks to be this season's charmer. Like most Pixar flicks, Wall*E will appeal to all ages which will garner repeat business.
Ben Burtt, the man who helped breath life into the Star Wars and Indiana Jones sagas, is serving as Sound Designer for Wall*E. One of the comments in the trailer is that after 700 years, Wall*E's developed one little glitch -- a personality -- and who better to bring out that personality than Burtt.
In just under three minutes, you develop a connection with the little Johnny-5 look-a-like and already begin to care about his journey. The love affair between Wall*E and the transplanted Eve could be one for the ages. Forget about Bogie and Bacall, Tracy and Hepburn -- the new measuring stick for on-screen love affairs could be this robotic duo.
If Pixar's track record is an indicator, Wall*E will rack in its share of the summertime green and rank in the top 10 for the summer. Along with Burtt, lending their voices will be Jeff Garlin, Fred Willard, Sigourney Weaver and John Ratzenberger. Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) will be at the helm for this picture.
Then there is (un)Wanted.
I know I shouldn't be too hard on a flick after seeing just a couple of trailers and clip but this movie looks ridiculous -- and not in a good way.
It has all the elements working for it. Crazy action sequences, a decent storyline and Angelina Jolie. Yep, it's all there but there's too much of it.
It starts with Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) shooting the wings off of flies, then Gibson's picked up by a speeding sports car driven by Fox (Jolie) and finally Mr. X (David O'Hara) goes Matrix-style out of a high rise. I'm a lover of special effects but Wanted looks to go over the top in too many places, threatening to pull the viewer out of the story often.
The only scene I found intriguing was the final car scene when Gibson pulls a roll in a classic Mustang, popping his target through the sunroof of his limo.
Wanted stars Jolie, McAvoy and Morgan Freeman and is directed by Timur Bekmambetov.
Final Cut: If you want a relaxing time to sit back and barrel laugh with your kids, make sure to check Wall*E out. If on the other hand you want to see a typical action flick that's been beaten to death by special effects, Wanted appears to be your movie.
