Who cares about the World Cup? I do.

Posted Sunday, June 13, 2010, at 3:23 PM

For one day it seemed the people of the United State began to somewhat embrace the sport of soccer. As the big match between England in the FIFA World Cup loomed on Saturday, it was all the rage. But a day after, what are people saying?

Listening to one sports talk show after another, it seems the day was simply dismissed. The U.S. squad battled England to a 1-all tie, something frankly, I didn't expect them to do and I guess it's no big deal. But shouldn't the U.S. have lost this game? In a word -- yes.

When you watch the MLS as opposed to Premier League soccer, the difference is striking. Passes are on a dime, the formations are superb and the action is better. I like to watch the MLS whenever I can, but I would prefer to watch Manchester United any day of the week. Another aspect of the game that is better is the crowds.

These people are insane for soccer. It's like taking the most raucous fans from an Oakland Raiders game, hop them up on a case of Red Bull and let them loose. It's scary, it's intense and most of all, it's fun as heck.

So, for anyone looking for something to do on Friday morning, check out the United States versus Slovenia at 9 a.m. It might not be our cup of football, but it's the world's game, so enjoy.
