Home for the holidaysPosted Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at 2:09 PM
(My apologies to anyone expecting something like last week's column. I spent part of my drive this morning listening to the Elvis Christmas album, and so many of his Christmas songs deal with either getting home for Christmas or not being able to. It get's me weepy every time.)
Who would've thought this would be the weather I'd want for Christmas Eve? When I woke up this morning, I found a cold rain, plenty of fog and way too much mud.
It was perfect.
Normally, I'd be dreaming of a white Christmas, but after Tuesday night, I was ready for anything that wasn't covered with a thick coat of ice.
Rain and fog, while not exactly pretty, meant the temperatures had risen above freezing.
More importantly, it meant I could go home.
My original plan had been to drive home Tuesday night, but Mother Nature let me know that was a bad idea.
That put about an eight hour delay on my trip home.
Now, for the last year and a half, Nicole and I have done everything possible to make Putnam County our home. While there still are adjustments to be made, I do feel at home in Greencastle.
But not on Christmas. At this time of year, it doesn't matter where you reside; home is with the people who mean the most to you in the world. Both of us grew up in back here, so that's where we belong for at least a good chunk of the holiday celebrating.
And that's where we are right now. We're back here with our families, where we should be on Christmas Eve.
I think anyone reading this understands that sentiment. You can have a merry Christmas anywhere, but the company you keep makes it a whole lot easier to do.
So wherever you are, whether it be back there in Putnam County or somewhere away, I pray that you are as at home as we are right now.
It's the only place to be.
Merry Christmas to all of you!
