Catching up

Posted Friday, December 17, 2010, at 10:57 AM

As was documented in her column today, our editor went through a bit of a health scare earlier this week that landed her in the hospital overnight.

Then as a parting gift she got laryngitis. Wonderful.

With an editorial staff of five, anytime one of us goes down, it's a little crazy. It's especially crazy when it's Jamie who's out because suddenly people are looking at me like I'm in charge or something. I know that technically I am, but I don't like to think about it.

This week, though, the universe had something even more fun in store from us. As Jamie was enjoying the land of open-backed gowns and IVs, I was at home, huddled under three blankets and a sweatshirt with a 102-degree fever.

I could tell something was coming on Sunday night, but I had to work. So I battled through a few hours here before heading home to sleep it off. The fever broke Monday morning, but I went ahead and stayed home from work.

Throughout Monday and the early part of Tuesday (back at work), I battled "digestive issues" I won't discuss here. I thought my system was just working out the kinks.

Then on Tuesday evening, the fever came back, better than ever. It's like it was just waiting for a day-and-a-half to attack me again. At some point in the night, I had to make a call to my brother (a former paramedic) to ask "At what temperature should I go to the doctor?"

Fortunately, I fell just short.

With plenty of fluid, a cool bath and plenty of help from my wife, the fever broke for good that night. I went right back to work.

When I crossed paths with that people that day, I could see them take a step back when I said I'd had a fever the night before. Probably a good call.

So the remainder of the week has been a blur. Catching up on work that should already be done or that really needs done now. There's also figuring out what can be put off for a day or two (like this blog).

This is why I don't take many days off, whether it be for pleasure or pain. All I can ever really think about is the catching up on work I'll have to do in the days that follow.

Now it's on to the weekend for me. I also have some sleep and some Christmas shopping to catch up on.
