Really, it's not a sport
I, like so many other people, have gotten into the poker coverage on ESPN and other outlets in recent years. I'm not sure why except that I enjoy the strategy of it all and the ridiculous characters that inhabit the poker tables.
Last summer, I even put some World Series of Poker coverage on the pages of our sports section. It raised the eyebrows of my editor, but she allowed it. (In my defense, it was July, the absolute slowest time of year for a small town sports department.
But as to whether it's a sport, the jury was still out.
However, after Saturday, I'm quite sure. Poker is not a sport. There is no question in my mind.
Why? Because, at an undisclosed garage in Putnam County, I won the first game of poker and placed second in the second game.
That's right, all 5-foot-7, 225 pounds of me won at an activity some would consider a sport. But I am emphatically not an athlete. I fancied myself one once, but that was 10 years ago. It's all been downhill since then.
Even my golf game has gone very far south since high school, and golf was certainly the least athletic of the sports I was involved in. I can't even imagine trying to play football or swim competitively again.
That would be a big joke.
So, there you go -- poker is not a sport. My own ability to be mediocre at it is all the proof you need.
