My weakness returns
Cole and I are up before 8 a.m. (!) waiting for the cable guy. With the new house, we decided initially to do without cable for a while to save money.
The lack of distraction has also been good for my reading and writing. However, I've also spent too much time staring at our TV wishing it got more than 10 channels (seven of which were really strange religious programming).
It was a noble effort while it lasted, but it's all over now. The dude is on his way and we will soon have the drone of mindless entertainment available in three rooms of our house.
So, now that I'm about the rejoin society, what am I looking forward to the most? There will be live sports and Sportscenter at all hours of the day. There will be at least a dozen 24-hour news outlets. There will be several dedicated music channels. (MTV and VH1 aren't on this list, but that's a discussion for another time.)
There will even be a channel entirely about America's favorite sports league, along with access to those Thursday night games.
All that's nice, but I think I've really missed the History Channel. That's right, I'm one of those dorks. I'm sure you all knew I was some sort of dork, but now I'm a bit easier to classify.
I can't resist the random documentary about the Edmund Fitzgerald ... or Benedict Arnold ... or ancient Hebrew military strategy ... or Hoover Dam ... the National Road ... any number of gold rushes ... Lincoln's assassination ... Kennedy's assassination (Jack or Bobby) ... Teddy Roosevelt's manliness ... the dive bombing of London ... or the Hindenburg.
"Oh, the humanity," indeed! My sick sense of wonder especially misses the disaster tales. Give me a whole day of San Francisco earthquakes, and I just might have to call in sick to work.
I mean, no I wouldn't.
Maybe I should upgrade to DVR.
A side note: It's now 2 p.m. and we've had cable back for three hours or so. I'm reminded of how much cable programmers have lost focus. We all know that MTV (supposedly Music Television) no longer features music, but the problem runs deeper.
TLC (The Learning Channel) now specializes in shows about octuplets, dwarves and child beauty pageants. The only thing I'm learning is that TLC viewers are kind of sick voyeurs.
TV Land now shows movies. Hello?! It's TV Land. Movies are another beast entirely.
What's next? Cage fighting on Lifetime? Unbiased reporting on Fox News or MSNBC? Anything at all worth watching on truTV?
Come on people! Let's focus on our strengths!
