Too much fun
As much as I love spending time with my wife and new son, a break every once in a while never hurt anyone. That opportunity came this weekend.
My wife's grandmother turned 75 years old, so the two of them headed for the north part of the state to help celebrate.
I, on the other hand, had already committed to covering the Crown Street Jazz and Blues Festival. I've only been twice, but it's one of my favorite events here in Greencastle. So I stayed behind.
The weekend was great. After dropping them off in Crawfordsville Saturday morning, I slept a big part of the afternoon. Then at 4, there was a Reds vs. Cardinals game on TV, and I got to watch the entire game. That really doesn't happen much.
The rest of the weekend was devoted to music. On Saturday night, I headed to Terre Haute for an outstanding show at The Verve by If By Whiskey, featuring local musicians Dennis and Kenn Furr.
They're really good. Check them out.
And then, of course, Sunday was the festival. I may be better versed in the rock world, but I love listening to good jazz, particularly live.
It's always an amazing afternoon, and I got to take in the whole thing without worrying that I should be at home attending to anything.
But after the final notes had faded, there I was, at home alone. It was a little bit sad.
I think I always worried that getting married and having kids (I've done both now) would take away the "me" time. I was exactly right -- you're "me" time goes right out the window for the most part. You treasure it when you have it.
Those times aren't nearly as important as they used to be. The "me" moments are good for my mind in finding some peace, but the "us" moments fill up my soul.
That's the stuff that really matters.
