Where are all the good movies?

What has happened to Hollywood? It seems to me that year after year, movies are losing their appeal. During the holidays there are usually at least two or three movies that get moviegoers like me excited. For the past several years there just doesn't seem like there are very many exciting flicks coming out.
What happened to the movies like Casablanca and Titanic? Even those warm comedy romances like "You've got Mail" and "Restless in Seattle" are missing these days. Where are the "Notting Hills" and "Second Hand Lions"? Most movies these days are just plain trash. Many of the young actors in Hollywood have such disgusting lifestyles and so little talent that the movies that they make are just not worth watching…. Who wants to watch a person that goes to jail every couple of months or somebody who is in drug rehab twice a year?
We continue to see remake after remake of some of the great classics. Where are the new plots or old plots with new twists?
Yes, there are the Harry Potters, Indiana Jones and even Star Wars flicks that continue to draw us into overpriced movie theaters. Of course, most of those we can rent or see on cable these days. I know we own all the Star Wars and Harry Potters in more than one format.
Even Disney hasn't produced anything magical in some time. The pixie dust seems to have dried up. Nemo was the last good kids movie I remember seeing. Although my grandson and did enjoy Cars and we do plan to see the new Madagascar movie over the holidays.
The old classic Christmas movies are still the ones we watch…White Christmas, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, The Grinch…that's about it. There are so many great books out there. Surely, some new plots could be adapted. I know I'm tired of spending $20 to see a movie and regret spending my money in that manner.
Even my husband, who when I married him came with hundreds of videos of all kinds of movies, doesn't have much interest in going to the movies any more. It's not that he or we don't want to go; it's just that there is not much to entice us.
I think this holiday season instead of heading out the movies we'll just stay at home and read a couple of good books. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I urge you to make the drive to the Keystone Fashion Mall to see "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." One of the most memorable films I've ever seen. Definately not a warm and fuzzy movie by any means, but something everyone should see.
Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks were in "You've Got Mail" and "SLEEPLESS in Seattle". And "Titanic" as a classic? Maybe several years down the road, but not yet. "Casablanca" is a classic. "Titanic" was the theme to my Junior Prom. And I am not that old! Despite my little rant, I have to agree for the most part. I know my husband is not fond of the theatre, but I love going and have not had the desire to really go waste my money on tickets, let alone anything else if I can pay a quarter of the cost for both of us to see a movie from the video store. Even buying it is cheaper than going out when you take into consideration the cost of gas, tickets, if you get any concessions, and/or if you go out to dinner while you are in town.
