Festival season is underway

This June is a really busy month for my family. It's the start of festival season for us. This weekend we are off to the Strawberry Festival in Crawfordsville and in two weekends we head to Fishers for their annual celebration. My husband and I have a craft business. We make natural stone jewelry and some unique bead jewelry--dice bracelets and earrings. We sell a lot of these in northern Indiana where they play a dice game called Bunco. Of course, our dice bracelets and earrings (complete with sparklies) are guaranteed to bring the player good luck. At least that is what we tell everyone. It might a bit of a problem for those groups who play together and all have our lucky dice. We often sell sets to entire clubs that meet weekly. I think this year we will begin saying, "Guaranteed to bring good luck, we just don't know when." Another favorite are our kids character travel pillows. These grew out of making pillows for my grandkids and have proved to be a pretty good seller. Among the favorites are a Where's Bart (Simpson), princess and fairy pillows. They come in handy on the drive home late at night or those really early mornings when we have to leave home at 4 or 5 a.m. We started this business thinking we would do a little now and it would grow into a retirement business that we could take anywhere. My son often refers to us as "my carnie parents." But, we don't mind. We've met a lot of very nice people going to festivals, made a little money and best of all my husband and I actually get to spend some time together. We both led pretty busy lives and sometimes only see each other in passing, so spending an entire weekend in the midst of an arts and craft fair is often a joy. Of course, that joy usually comes after we have set up our tent and tables and had a second cup of coffee. If you're looking for something fun to do this weekend, come to the Strawberry Festival in Crawfordsville and stop by "Sweet Nana's." And, if you're feeling lucky we'll sell you a set of dice jewelry. |
