I've been worried that I wouldn't find a television show to replace my favorite Gilmore Girls that went off the air last year. I loved the quick exchanges and witty dialogue.
However, I think I've found a replacement. "Drop Dead Diva" is Lifetime's spirited new comedic drama series that puts a unique and entertaining spin on the complex issues of a woman's identity in today's world. The show tells the story of a beautiful-but-vapid model wannabe, Deb played by Brooke Elliott, who has a fatal car accident and suddenly finds herself in front of Heaven's gatekeeper, Fred (Ben Feldman), who declares her a self-centered "zero." Deb persuades Fred to return her to her shallow existence but is accidentally relegated to the body of the recently deceased lawyer Jane Bingum. Jane has always lived in the shadow of her more comely colleagues, while Deb relied on her external beauty to get along. Now, by a twist of fate and a bolt of divine intervention, Deb has to come to terms with inhabiting Jane's plus-size frame and learn to reconcile her beauty queen ways with her brilliant new mind. No one knows about the body exchange except for Jane's roommate Stacy (April Bowby) who was Deb's best friend and Fred, her guardian angel. Fortunately, her doctors declared she had a form of amnesia explaining why she doesn't remember people from Jane's life. Her actual injury occurred when she literally took a bullet for her boss. Along with "Jane" are several other entertaining characters. She has a loyal, smart-mouthed and very efficient assistant named Teri (Margaret Cho), Deb's boyfriend Grayson (Jackson Hurst) who just started working at the same firm and of course a good-looking rival Kim (Kate Levering) who is interested in Grayson. Her boss Parker (Josh Stamberg) is a difficult, egotistic lawyer who should belong to the Dewey, Cheatem' and How law firm. Making guest appearances so far have been Teri Polo, Rosie O'Donnell, Kathy Najimy, Jorgi Fox and Elliott Gould. The show is insightful, entertaining and endearing. I highly recommend it. While it's not Lorelei and Rory Gilmore, it is poignant at times, can make you laugh and even cry. Mostly, it's great entertainment. Drop Dead Diva is on Lifetime Sundays at 9 p.m. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
