Art and essays reflecting the quote "We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools" by Martin Luther King Jr. won honors during the MLK Day program Monday at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. Among the winners were Kayla Clodfelter of Bainbridge Elementary, Marisa Stiles of Cloverdale High School, Conner Taylor of Deer Meadow Primary and Jacob Young of Ridpath Primary, all in the art division. Essay division winners included Brayden Watson of Tzouanakis Intermediate, Bailee Stevens of Cloverdale Middle School, Erik Norlin Haylie Romer and Alice Moore of Greencastle Middle School, and Cody Watson of Greencastle High School. Not pictured is Alyssa Rouse of Bainbridge Elementary.

Among the events at the two-hour program were music by the Greencastle String School, singing by Greencastle primary students, videos and an art fair that included kaleidoscopes, origami, button and molecule making, hands around the world, an African American time line and Read to Understand. Sponsors of the event were Putnam County Public Library, Gobin Church, NAACP, Bright Futures, Eitel's Flowers and Gifts, Putnam County school corporations, Putnam County Museum, Greencastle String School, Greencastle League of Women Voters, Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce, DePauw University and Sodexho. Student awards were made possible by NAACP, Putnam County Council on Aging (Senior Center), Sue Murray and the DePauw University Office of the President. Also assisting in the planning and activities were Bonner Scholars Class of 2011, Olufemi Ekulona, Dorothy Brown, Rajai Bimbo, Jill Dombrowski, Miles Salman, Lucy Wieland, Martha Rainbold, Diane Hightower and Charles Miles, Charity Pankratz and Sue Parsons.
