CARBON -- Clay County's ties to John Dillinger are deeper than just one of his confidants living here for a period of time. In fact, a picture hanging in the Carbon Museum shows the aftermath of a bank robbery alleged to have been the work of Dillinger...

BRAZIL -- "Public Enemies," a feature film dramatizing the life and times of John Dillinger and his infamous gang of robbers, officially hit theaters just after midnight. As the movie invaded the big screen, a piece of Clay County history followed. One-time Brazil resident Harry Pierpont, who was a friend and mentor to Dillinger, was a member "Terror Gang," that robbed several banks in Indiana, including Central National Bank in Greencastle of more than $74,000, Oct. 23, 1933...

Plans are being finalized for the third annual National Night Out scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4 from 6-9 p.m. at Greencastle's Robe-Ann Park. This event would not be possible without agencies, organizations, volunteers and sponsors that support our efforts to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness. ...

To the Editor: Each month, volunteer pilots from Angel Flight Central fly patients needing specialized medical care, including chemotherapy and dialysis, to hospitals throughout Indiana. Many of these patients are from rural areas and would otherwise be hard-pressed to receive the care they need...

The Putnam County Museum is moving along with research for the fall exhibit of Putnam County Haunts. However, the still need the public's help. As part of the exhibit, they hope to have personal stories from folks who know, have heard, or have experienced any haunted tales or activities. Forrest Hill Cemetery? Goat Moy? Four Arches? Dell H. Nunaley Jr. died Tuesday, June 30, 2009. He was born in 1935 in Warren County, Ky. to Dell and Flora Nunaley. His family moved to Indianapolis and later purchased a farm outside Coatesville which Dell farmed with his father. His parents and four sisters preceded him in death...

Wanda J. Grimes, 78, of Greencastle died Monday, June 29, 2009. She was born on Aug. 27, 1930 in Greencastle to Eddie and Rachel Albin Buis. A graduate of Greencastle High School, Mrs. Grimes retired from Mallory Company and was a long time member of Greencastle Christian Church and Windy Hill Country Club...

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale Farmers Market, sponsored by Cloverdale Main Street, has opened. The market is located on the open lot at the corner of Lafayette and Logan Streets in downtown Cloverdale, one block east of 231. It expanded in 2008 to include vendors to sell their homemade craft items, artistic creations and flowers in addition to homegrown produce and eggs. The spacious lot allows for generous setups as well as gives easy access for patrons of the market...
