Local survivor active in 'Weekend to End Breast Cancer' (05/03/10)
One in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Karen Phillips was one of those eight women. It started with an annual mammogram in August 2007. A few months later, Karen was diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer. Since stage 0 means the cancer cells have not invaded the normal tissue, a total mastectomy can cure the problem with radiation rarely needed...

The teachers, staff, and students of Tzouanakis Intermediate surprised Mr. Dan TeGrotenhuis on Friday with an early birthday present. Everyone dressed in attire from the 1960s and gifted him with packages of "60." Music from the decade and photos were enjoyed during lunch. His cart quickly became filled with clipboards, treats, cards, math facts, paper clips, bus incident reports and even 60 pounds of dirt.
