Shrum is top female student-athlete

The Greater Greencastle Chamber of Commerce presented its 2012-13 Putnam County Female Senior Student Athlete of the Year Award on Wednesday to Cloverdale's Sydney Shrum. The award is presented annually to the high school senior who best exhibits qualities in academics, athletics and leadership. Winners receive a plaque and a $250 scholarship, presented by the GGCC and the Teacher's Credit Union. Shrum was chosen ahead of nominees from South Putnam, Greencastle and North Putnam. Students are nominated by their coaches and athletic directors, then a winner is chosen by a committee of five. Shrum (center), shown with Chamber representatives Megan Tucker (left) and Beth Flint, earned 12 total varsity letters in four sports -- golf, basketball, track and cross country -- during her career at Cloverdale. She was a three-time captain in basketball and was named to the all-county team after her sophomore, junior and senior years. Shrum's best sport is golf, where she earned four varsity letters, four all-county teams, two county championships, three all-conference teams, three regional qualifications and one state finals appearance (2012). She was also named the All-Wabash Valley Player of the Year as a senior. She set school records for nine-holes (36), season average (39.8) and 18-hole (75) scores. Shrum ranks fifth in her class with a 3.987 cumulative GPA and was a recipient of Perfect Behavior, Cumulative Honors (2010-13), Academic All-Conference (2012-13), Foreign Language Award, Business Award and Indiana Academic Honors Diploma. She is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, Mu Alpha Theta and is Student Council President.
