Herbert J. Gruener, 69, Martinsville, died Saturday at St. Francis Hospital South, Indianapolis.

Born in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of Herbert and Mae (Ferrell) Gruener.

A 1955 graduate of Nutley High School in Nutley, N.J., he served in the U.S. Navy from 1955-59 on the USS Prinston and USS Hornett. He was transferred to Indiana in 1975 from Budd Lake N.J. and was midwest sales manager for Ameripol SynPol Rubber, retiring in 1996 after 37 years of service. He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Martinsville.

He married Theresa Dallen on June 27, 1959. She survives.

Also surviving are six sons, Jim Gruener and wife Penny, Gosport, Bob Gruener and wife Valerie, Fillmore, Bill Gruener and wife Debbie, Cloverdale, John Gruener, Indianapolis, Joe Gruener and wife Chris, Brazil, and Jeff Gruener and wife Kim, Paragon; daughter Beth Clodfelter and husband Ron, Greencastle; sister Jean Robinson, Eminence; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Costin Funeral Chapel, Martinsville, with Father John Hall officiating. A military service will follow.

Visitation is 5-7 p.m. Thursday.
