Thelma L. Burkhardt, 86, Greencastle, died Tuesday evening at Asbury Towers, Greencastle.

Born Nov. 12, 1919 in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Ralph E. and Clara (McCoy) Jackson.

A graduate of Zionsville High School, Indianapolis Office Machine School and the Nursing Home Administrators Course from 1968-69, she had been a bookkeeper and assistant director of the Senior Volunteer Program in Putnam County for 17 years, retiring in 1990. She had also worked two years in the office of Asbury Towers, and had been a homemaker.

She was active in volunteer work, and was a member of Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, charter member and board member of the Putnam County Humane Society, charter member of the League of Women Voters since 1953, Clean City Committee from 1990-94, secretary and treasurer of the Putnam County Council on Aging, United Methodist Women Oxford Circle, Lady Elks and Putnam County Hospital Guild.

She married Ned I. Burkhardt on Nov. 17, 1939. He died April 1, 1981.

Surviving are a daughter, Deanna Killeen and husband Al, Huntsville, Ohio; two sons, Daniel Burkhardt and wife Susan, English, and Duncan Burkhardt and wife Pamela, Highland Ranch, Colo.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister Ruth Schafer in 2003.

A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6 at Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, Greencastle, with Rev. Larry Burton officiating.
