William F. Smith, 83, Poland, died Wednesday at his residence.

Born in Tulsa, Okla., he was the son of the late William F. Smith and Maude E. (Smith) Smith. He married Phyllis Lee (Talley) Smith on May 12, 1967, and she survives.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he later worked as a contract truckman for Mayflower and United Van Lines.

He was a member of Cloverdale Christian Church, American Legion Post No. 495, Indianapolis, and VFW Post No. 261, Indianapolis.

Additional survivors include four daughters, Carolyn Wargo and husband Tim, Dumas, Ariz., Janelle Douglas, Ft. Worth, Texas, Susan Davis, Indianapolis, and Terri Basso and husband Robert, Greewood; three sons, Phillip Davis and wife Brenda, Greenfield, Gary Davis and wife Kathy, Greenfield, and John Smith, Indianapolis; 17 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Smith, a sister, Bernice White, and a brother, Robert Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Cloverdale, with Jared Odle officiating. Burial will follow at Manna Cemetery, Cloverdale.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
