Memoree Joan Powell, 69, Greencastle, died Wednesday at Putnam County Hospital.
Born in Veblen, S.D., her deceased mother, Cora, was Native America Dakota Sioux descendent.
She was a participant member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate tribe all her life and was a graduate of Flandreau High School in South Dakota. She also received her nursing degree from Indiana University.
She married John J. Powell on June 12, 1965.
She worked in the nursing profession for 32 years, having spent 26 years as a registered nurse/supervisor at Putnam County Hospital. She was involved with the administration training medical personnel for the future.
She was a member of the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the Curves Organization, where she received acknowledgement with publication in their national magazine.
Survivors include her husband, sons Michael "Boog" Powell, Greencastle, James J. Powell, Providence, R.I.; daughter Joan Marie Mundy and husband Tim, Greencastle; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Services will take place at the St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Sisseton, S.D. Burial is set for St. Matthew's Catholic Cemetery, Veblen, S.D.
Visitation is from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home.
