Greencastle boys get fourth WCC win

Saturday, February 4, 2006

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs boys' basketball team hosted the Monrovia Bulldogs Friday night in the final West Central Conference game of the season for the Tiger Cubs.

Monrovia played Greencastle tough, but the Tiger Cubs' aggressive full-court defense caused problems for the Bulldogs. Greencastle defeated Monrovia, 70-45, finishing with a 4-2 WCC record for the season.

The game opened with both teams trading the lead back and forth seven times in the first five minutes of the game. From there, Greencastle went on a 9-2 run that gave the Tigers a lead they would never relinquish.

Cal Gard, Brian Troyer, Brennan Burks, and Erick Burgeson were all able to get into the scoring column in the first quarter and give the home team a 17-11 advantage at the first break.

The Tigers went on a scoring binge, outscoring the Bulldogs, 45-24, in the second and third quarters.

Michael Richardson, Quinn Fenlon, Austin Miller, and Kendall Faust joined their teammates in scoring during the stretch.

Greencastle led 39-21 at halftime and 62-35 at the end of the third period.

In the third, the Tiger Cubs, who subbed with six minutes left in the fourth quarter, experienced the only stanza that the Bulldogs outscored them, 8-10.

Greencastle won the game by outshooting Monrovia 47 to 38 percent, outrebounding them 31 to 18, gathering 18 steals versus six and forcing 21 turnovers.

'I thought we came out and we didn't hit very many shots in the beginning, although we got good shots,' commented Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee after the game. 'I was happy with the way we played when we didn't hit those shots. We still hung in there and played.'

'That was one of those things earlier in the year. We got down about things like that, Greenlee said. 'I was encouraged to see that when we didn't hit our shots, we still defended, we still rebounded.'When we did get our shots to go, we made a couple of runs.

'We are getting better; we still have some things we need to get better at, obviously, Greenlee added. 'Tomorrow is going to be a good test for us against a team that we might possibly play in the Sectional.

'It was a big win, but again, we can't be satisfied," he said.

Greencastle had three players who scored in double figures. Gard led the way with 17 points, Burgeson had 11 and Fenlon added 10.

Richardson and Burks followed with eight, Faust and Troyer had six, and Zac Remsburg and Miller closed out the Tiger Cub scoring with two points.

Burks was the leading rebounder of the game with 8 caroms and Remsburg pulled-down five boards and Fenlon and Zach Smiley had four each.

Richardson had a game-high six assists.

Burks had a game-high three blocked shots.

Remsburg had a game-high four steals, and Richardson and Troyer had three each.

The Tiger Cubs (8-9, 4-2 WCC) host Brown County Saturday night (tonight). The junior varsity game will begin at 6:00.
