Golden Arrows strike Tiger Cubs

Wednesday, February 8, 2006

The Greencastle High School girls' basketball team season ended earlier than some people had hoped.

On Tuesday, the Tiger Cubs dropped their final game of the season to Sullivan, 55-38, in the first round of the Greencastle Sectional.

From the start of the game until the end, the Golden Arrows controlled the momentum and set the pace for the entire contest, never to trail during the game.

"Seventeen turnovers in the first half and they beat us by 17 and you can count one point for every turnover," GHS Coach Glenn Hile said.

No matter what the Tiger Cubs tried they couldn't get the ball past the Golden arrow defense.

In the first quarter, Sullivan's defense only gave up five shots to the Tiger Cubs in which they only hit two, with their final point in the quarter coming from the charity stripe. The Golden Arrows stole the ball five times from the Tiger Cubs in the first quarter alone.

In the second period, Greencastle's offense was able to generate more shots, but not very many more points, and its defense gave up more points than it could afford. The Tiger Cubs went 5-for-11 in the second quarter for 10 points, but their defense gave up another 13 points.

The Golden Arrows got a short burst midway through the quarter when they went on a 9-0 run led by Jessica Dugan, who had seven of the nine. Stefanie Masten tried to cut the Golden Arrows lead to seven with a three-pointer at the buzzer, but missed, and at the break Sullivan led by 10 at 25-5.

'If Stefanie would have hit that three-pointer at the buzzer in at the end of the first half we wold have only been down by seven. We need to get back into the single digits,' Hile said. 'We dug ourselves too deep in the beginning against a very good team.'

The second half was no different for Greencastle. It continued to get the shots, but just couldn't get any of them to fall. The Tigers Cubs shot 4-for-14 in the third quarter while their defense continued to falter, giving up another 13 points.

The last quarter proved to be Greencastle's best quarter of the night. The two seniors, Masten and Kyrian Marshall showed Sullivan they weren't leaving McAnally without a fight. Masten drained a big three-pointer one-minute into the game, answering Sullivan's quick bucket. Laura Weatherford followed Masten's trey with another quick two-point bucket. With just under four minutes left in the game, Marshall showed Emily Lahay of Sullivan what its like to be a post player. Marshall scored five of the last eight points for Greencastle in the paint over Lahay. The Tiger Cubs final points came from Weatherford when she hit a three-pointer with 35 seconds left in the game.

'We only had five turnovers in the second half and we never quit. We never hung our heads and quit,' Hile said.

Hile finished his first season back a record of 9-13 and West Central Conference record of 3-3 and he said it was a little disappointing.

'I'm a little disappointed. I thought we were a better than 9-13, but I had fun and it's good to be back,' he said.

The Tiger Cubs were paced by Masten who had 14 points followed by Marshall with 11. Oliva Mller scored six points while Weatherford chipped in five points and Grace Fisher had two.
