Tiger Sharks compete at State meet

INDIANAPOLIS - Members of the Greencastle High School girls' swim team made their way to Indy, Friday for the preliminary round of the 32nd annual IHSAA state swim finals.

Unfortunately, the evening did not go as the Tiger Sharks had hoped. The relay team of Kelsey Murtagh, Kendi Thomas, Erica Soster and Alys Moore that advanced out of the Crawfordsville Sectional failed to qualify for the finals for today. In its first event, the 200-yard medley relay finished in 31st with a time of 1:57.57.

The teams luck didn't change in their next event, the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team finished in 31st again with a time of 1:45.06, just a little over a minute longer than what their seed time was.

"We came here to have fun and we knew it was going to be hard to come back swim after the sectional," GHS Coach Emilie Bowman said. "When it comes down to it times and places don't matter. They had fun and the girls pleased with themselves and I'm pleased with them."

Moore was the last Tiger Shark to compete in the prelims. She swam in the 100-yard breaststroke. She advanced out of the Crawfordsville Sectional with a time of 1:09.97, but was only able to put together a time of 1:12.77. Nearly three seconds slower than her seed time, placing her in 38th place.

To advance to the final round, a relay team or individual swimmer has to place in the top 16 places. The top eight advance to the championship round while the bottom eight swim in the consolation round.

"We have accomplished so much this season and the state meet doesn't really show weigh in on how much we accomplished," Bowman said.
