North, South Putnam earn wins in golf Tuesday

After splitting its season opener, the North Putnam High School boys' golf team bounced back and defeated West Central Conference foe Monrovia 155-177 Tuesday at Old Hickory golf course.

J.J. Burns led the Cougars, shooting a 37, to earned medal honors. Eric Whitaker fell just one stroke short of medal honors, shooting a 38 while Patrick Byrd shot a 40. Jeremy Redman had a score of 40 while and Austin Malayer shot a 46. Stephen Roberts rounded out the Cougars scoring, shooting a 43.

In junior varsity action, the Cougars totaled 197 strokes led by Kyle Smith who shot a 41. Andy Curry had a 47 while Darren Wiatt finished with a 52. Josh Mitchener shot a 57 and Bill Shearer round out the JV score with 60.

The Cougars are back in action on Monday when they host Tri-West at Old Hickory starting a 4 p.m.

Eagles fall

South Putnam lost a close match to Danville Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles finished with a score of 173, losing to Danville by just four strokes.

South Putnam's Tyler Newby shot an even-par score of 35 in the meet to earn medalist honors, while Ben Anderson finished with a 44.

Cory Welty shot a 45 on the day, followed by Rudger Bollman's score of 50. Tyler Shoffner rounded out the Eagles' top six with a score of 54.

The Eagles' JV squad also lost in Tuesday's match. Their total score for the day was 220, 30 strokes more than Danville's final score of 190.

South Putnam's next match will be Thursday when they'll hit the road to take on Tri -West at 4:30 p.m.
