ELLETTSVILLE -- Greencastle earned the right to meet Edgewood in Thursday's sectional semifinal after a hard-fought, 4-3 win Monday afternoon over Owen Valley.

The Tiger Cubs avenged a regular season, 13-10 loss to the Patriots by capitalizing on a passed ball and a ball lost in the sun that led to two runs in the third and forced the Patriots (12-13) to play from behind.

Greencastle scored the game's first run at Ermil Clark Field on a solo home run off the bat of junior Erick Burgeson in the second inning.

Owen Valley's Andrew Hershberger answered with a solo home run of his own to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the third.

Although the Patriots played errorless baseball behind starting pitcher Ryan Hobbs, a pair of potential runs were stopped at the plate by Tiger Cub catcher Kendall Faust.

Patriot Craig Roberts, who went 2-for-3 at bat, stole second in fourth and tried to score on a Jake Sweatman single but was thrown out at home by Tiger Cub Michael Richardson.

Trailing by one in the top of the sixth, Roberts doubled sophomore Jeremy Mosier to third. Mosier scored off a Tyler Stutsman single but Roberts potential go-ahead run was again stopped by a perfect throw to home by Tiger Cub Zac Remsburg.

Greencastle pitcher Derrek Patterson broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the stanza with an RBI-single to left.

Despite the Patriots' hard-luck base running, the team still had a chance in the seventh.

Hershberger reached on an infield single with one out and advanced to second on a Patterson bulk.

Patterson forced the potential third out when he got Owen Valley's Brian Jones to hit a pop fly, but dropped the ball after calling off the other Tiger Cub infielders.

Jones reached on the error and Hershberger advanced to third, placing the tying run in scoring position.

The junior right hander then faced a full count on the Patriots' clean-up hitter Nick Madison before retiring him on strikes.

Patterson went the distance on the mound, allowing just seven hits and three runs, all earned, striking out seven and giving up just three walks.

Greencastle managed just five hits in the win, led by second baseman Ryan Wilson with two and one each by Patterson, Richardson and Burgeson.

The Patriots scattered seven hits -- two each by Hershberger and Roberts, while senior Brett Worland, designated hitter Jake Sweatman and junior Tyler Stutsman finished with one, respectively.

Edgewood (16-9) defeated Sullivan by eight, 11-3, to advance to Thursday's 5 p.m. semifinal with Greencastle.
