Lilly leads Tiger Cubs over South Putnam, 318-350

BRAZIL -- In what was its final tuneup for postseason competition, the South Putnam High School boys' golf squad played host to Greencastle on Wednesday, falling 318-350, at the Oak Ridge Golf Course.

SPHS Coach Brian Gardner said the Eagles need more consistency in order to compete well at the Martinsville Sectional, scheduled to take place on Monday at the Martinsville Golf Club.

"We didn't play well," Gardner said. "This is the same problem that happened to us all year. I'm not pleased with our score. We're capable of doing better."

Greencastle Coach Donovan Wheeler, on the other hand, was pleased with his team's performance on Wednesday, especially with the sectional just right around the corner.

"We knew we wanted to make this an 18-hole match for that reason," Wheeler said.

"It's important to get an 18-hole round in. This was good experience for us."

David Lilly fired a 77 to win medal honors on Wednesday to lead the Tiger Cubs to the victory.

"He had a fantastic round," Wheeler said of Lilly.

"This is two huge rounds in a row for him."

Lee Masten also had a 78 for Greencastle while Eric Davis fired an 81 and D.J. Hendrich had an 82.

Other scores for the Tiger Cubs included Mark Davis with an 88 and Jacob Collins with a 94.

"Being below 320 is always a huge factor for us," Wheeler said. "But we've always believed we were a team that can shoot 300."

Tyler Newby led the Eagles with an 80.

Gardner said he was pleased with Newby's round, especially since Newby had been struggling on the links lately.

"Tyler played real well," Gardner said. "Today is not a great day for him, but he has been struggling."

Other scores for South Putnam included Jon Weaver with an 85, Rudger Bollman with a 92, Tyler Shoffner with a 93, Ben Anderson with a 94, and Cory Welty with a 99.

In junior varsity action, the Tiger Cubs picked up a 347-427 win.

Wade Huber led Greencastle with an 84 while Luke Crimmins had a 90.

Other scores for GHS included Kyle Harlen with a 91, Chris Krag with a 92 and Tyler Wade with a 93.

South Putnam was led by Aaron Clark's 98.

Other scores for the Eagles included D.C. Cook's 107, Jeff Chadd with a 109, Damon Robinson with a 113 and Richard Bennett with a 118.

The Tiger Cubs will host the Greencastle Invitational today, featuring Danville, Cascade, Edgewood, Whiteland, and two Greencastle teams. South Putnam does not play again until the sectional on Monday.
