Koosman fairs well at state

BLOOMINGTON -- Ashley Koosman's first trip to the Indiana High School Athletic Association Track and Field State Finals wasn't exactly how she planned it.

Koosman entered the finals jumping second off the line with a seeded height of 5-2.

On the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington Friday, Koosman was unable to clear 5-2 on her only three attempts.

Still, the Cloverdale sophomore said making it to the state finals was a good for her future.

"It was a good experience," Koosman said. "But I wish it would have lasted a little longer."

Koosman was one of seven jumpers that failed to miss the opening height. She said she headed into Friday's meet believing the opening height was 5-0.

"I was (surprised)," Koosman said. "I was nervous."

"It would have been nice if they started at 5-0, but we go with what they give us," Cloverdale Coach Kristin Crabtree said. "We're just proud she got this far."

Koosman said she thought she might make the opening height on her second attempt.

"I think I was close on my second one," she said. "I just skimmed it."

By not clearing the opening height, she finished in a tie for 14th overall. The top nine places all earned medals at the meet.
