SPENCER -- Wayne Bush proved to be too much for the Greencastle varsity football team Friday.

The Owen Valley senior ran for 231 yards and two touchdowns Friday at Owen Valley, as the Patriots rolled past the Tiger Cubs, 44-13.

"They run the ball very, very well," Greencastle coach Mike Meyer said. "They're a very aggressive football team and they played very well tonight and did some nice things."

The Patriots compiled 544 total yards, including 423 yards rushing against Greencastle. The Tiger Cubs gained 235 yards, including 157 yards passing from quarterback Cal Gard.

"We did some good things," Meyer said. "We just turned the ball over and shot ourselves in the foot. You can't do that with a good football team."

Greencastle got off to a quick start, putting the first points on the scoreboard. On the Tiger Cubs' third drive Gard hit wide receiver Nick Winters for a 70-yard touchdown to give Greencastle the lead, 7-0.

However, on the following drive Bush found his groove. The Owen Valley senior running back carried the ball five times for 62 yards, capping the Patriots' drive with a 37-yard touchdown run.

From there, Owen Valley took off, scoring 24 unanswered points. Greencastle got the ball moving at times, but turned the ball over in key situations. The Tiger Cubs had four turnovers in the contest.

"We moved the ball at times," Meyer said. "Turnovers hurt us."

Freshmen running back Drew Evens was one of the bright spots for the Tiger Cubs, rushing the ball for 62 yards on 14 carries, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Gard had a solid performance, throwing for two touchdowns, but was forced to make throws out of the pocket on third down.

"We've got to get better," Meyer said. "We're better than what the scoreboard said. We just didn't have a very good night."

Defensively, Greencastle forced three turnovers on the night. Michael Richardson and Brian Troyer each had interceptions, while the Tiger Cubs recovered a fumble for the third turnover. Richardson also had three receptions for 22 yards, while Winters had 114 yards receiving on the night.

The loss makes Greencastle 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the West Central Conference on the season. The Tiger Cubs play at Indianapolis Bishop Chatard Friday at 7 p.m. in the first game of the sectional tournament.

The Trojans are currently 7-2 and ranked No. 2 in Class 3A. Meyer knows the Tiger Cubs are going to have to play a solid football game to come away with a win.

"We're going to see the same offense against Chatard," he said. "We've got to stop the run. "
