The Tiger Cubs girls' varsity soccer team traveled to Terre Haute South High School for the first game of what was hoped to be another sectional championship, but turned out to be a season ended.
Greencastle fell to the Braves, 4-1 Saturday in game four of the Terre Haute South Sectional.
Right from the start of the match, the Braves let the Tiger Cubs know they would have to earn the victory, scoring two goals within the first three minutes of the match. THS scored another goal near the end of the first half, taking a 3-0 lead over the Tiger Cubs.
Greencastle came back in the second half, more determined than before to win the match. Greencastle held the Braves for the first few minutes of the half until they were able to get one by, senior goalie Kristen Ness.
Ness recorded 11 block shots or her final high school game.
The Tiger Cubs were able to get on the board with five minutes left when Becky Nispel picked up the pass from Jamie Grivas to score the lone Tiger Cub goal.
The Tiger Cubs were outmatched by the Braves' speed, but made up the difference in physical contact. The Tiger Cubs forced the Braves to play a physical game that resulted in the Braves slowing down their attacks on the Tiger Cubs' goal.
"I'm real proud of these girls and it was good year for us," GHS coach Maurice Mckee said. "They had good spirit all year, and played as a team for the entire year, unlike last year when they seem to drift apart at times. And we had excellent leadership from the seniors this year too."
The Tiger Cubs finished the season with a 11-6 record and said goodbye to seven seniors Graduating from the team are Alys Moore, Megan Lewis,Sherdian Woodall,Stevie Woodall, Jamie Grivas, Laura Smith and Ness.
"We will just chalk this one up as a real good game and we will be back next year," McKee said.
