The Greencastle High School varsity swim teams took on one of their largest opponents this season on Tuesday, facing Bloomington North at the DePauw Natatorium.

The boys' team lost a close meet with the Cougars, 96-81 while the girls' team lost, 111-66.

Despite losing the meet, both coaches were happy with the way their swimmers performed.

"We swam well and we are progressing," GHS Boys' Coach Paul Bretcher said. " We're better than we were a week ago and we will continue to progress,"

Girls' coach Emilie Bowman agreed.

"Even though we lost, we still did good," she said. "They are just a good team."

In the boys' races, the Cougars jumped right out at the Tiger Sharks in the beginning, winning the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle, but Andrew Bretscher rallied back for the Tiger Sharks, ripping through the water in the 200-individual medley in 2:04.17 for the blue ribbon.

Bloomington North tried to open up a gap by winning the 50-yard freestyle, but when it came time for the divers, it was all Greencastle. Patrick Rud stepped up and took care of businesses scoring 225 points while his teammate Paul Anthony claimed second place with a score 159.30.

"We were competitive with them. The divers came through and closed the gap between us," the elder Bretscher said.

Things got real competitive between the two teams after the diving competition. The Tiger Sharks claimed first in the 100-yard butterfly, with Andrew Bretscher winning his second blue ribbon with a time of 54.62, while the Cougars won the next two events, claiming first in 100-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.

The Tiger Sharks returned the favor in the 200-yard freestyle relay when the team of Jonathan Barber, Misha Serlin, Mark Jedele and Andrew Bretscher taking first place with a time of 1:36.85.

But the Cougars bounced back, winning the 100-yard backstroke, but Dustin Wood won the 100-yard breaststroke for Greencastle with a time of 1:09.04.

The Cougars prevailed and won the meet in the last event, by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Wood's performance in the 100 breaststroke earned him the title of Shark of the Meet along with Gus Lidaka for his 1:04 time in the 100 butterfly.

The girls didn't favor as well as their counterparts, but they still made a statement.

The Cougars were on the way to sweeping the Tiger Sharks by winning all the events, but it didn't happen thanks to Kelsey Murtagh and Alys Moore.

Murtaugh foiled the Cougars' sweep when she edged out her Bloomington North opponent in the 100 backstroke by less than one second to win the blue ribbon with a time of 1:04.78. Moore followed up her win with one for herself in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.24.

"There were several girls I could have given the shark to, but I split between Jeanette Jones and Morgan Terry," Bowman said.

Jones had a personal-best in the 200 IM and the100 breast while Terry had a personal-best in the 200 and 500 freestyle races.

The Tiger Sharks are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Southmont for a 6 p.m. start.
