CLAYTON --It was the Jessica Canary show Wednesday.

Canary led the South Putnam High School girls' basketball team to its second straight West Central Conference win, knocking off Cascade 51-48.

Canary posted a double-double, scoring 29 points and ripping down 21 boards.

"She is a great leader on the court and she commands the attention of the defense," SPHS Debbie Steffy said.

In the beginning, it looked like South Putnam was going to struggle with the Cadets. Cascade took control of the game in the first quarter, outscoring the Eagles, 13-11, but that all changed in the second quarter.

South Putnam took control of the game in the second quarter, with Canary leading the way. Canary opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run for the Eagles and would go on and score 17 of her 29 points. Cascade didn't score a single bucket until the 5:23 mark when they hit and outside jumper. At halftime the Eagles sat on top of a 31-21 lead.

Canary continued to make her presence known on the court in the third quarter. She penetrated the Cadet defense with ease, but was unable to get any of her shots to drop in. But she made it up with her rebounding, as she grabbed five boards in the third quarter and scored four more points.

The Eagles dominated the Cadets all the way until the fourth quarter.

The Cadets shut down the Eagles offense in the fourth quarter, limiting them to only nine points, while they went and lit up the scoreboard with 19.

The Cadets cut the Eagles' lead to one point with less than one minute left in the game, but Bailey Birt's two free throws in the end sealed the deal for the Eagles.

"We got really relaxed going into the fourth quarter. We had a 13-point lead and we knew they weren't going to lay dead on the court for us. We knew they could comeback, we just didn't play like they would come back," Steffy said.

With its win over Cascade, South Putnam is now 2-0 in the WCC and Steffy is convinced that the Conference is very equal this year.

"I think the conference is real equal this year. There are some players that can penetrate some defenses, but it looks like it will be an equal year. I just don't see any weak team this year," She said.

The Eagles also got 15 points from Meghan Canary while Megan Robinson pitched in four points. Birt had two points and Liz Mink chipped in one point.

The Eagles are now 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in the WCC and will be back in action on Dec. 30.
