SPEEDWAY -- After a solid first quarter, it looked like the Greencastle High School girls' basketball team would cruise to an easy victory but the Tiger Cubs dropped their first West Central Conference game of the year, 44-40, to Speedway on Friday.

Greencastle came out and lit the scoreboard up with 18 points, but all that would change in the second quarter.

Speedway bounced back and scored 14 points in the second quarter and held the Tiger Cubs to a mere four points.

"We got lost defensively in the second quarter and we just didn't play smart," GHS Coach Glenn Hile said. "I am very disappointed about our defense in the first half."

Greencastle may have slacked on its defense in the first half, but not in the second. The Tiger Cubs held the Sparkplugs to a total of 13 points in the second half and scored 18 points for themselves.

Greencastle only score two points in the third quarter but made it up in the fourth. It opened the fourth quarter up with 8-0 run, to get within four points of the lead.

The fate of the game bounced back between the two teams until the end. With 22 seconds left on the clock, Stefanie Masten nailed a clutch 3-pointer to pull the Tiger Cubs within two points of the lead, but that would be as close as they would get.

"I'm proud our effort in the second half to come back from as far as we did," Hile said. "The seniors came to play tonight and Masten and Kyrian Marshall did a good job. This was the best game Marshall has played in the last few games."

The Tiger Cubs were paced by Masten who posted 26 points while Marshall had 10 points. Olivia Miller had two points and Cassie Alspaugh finished with one point.

The Tiger Cubs will be back in action today at Riverton Parke at 2:30 p.m.
