Jerry L. Cox

Jerry L. Cox, 71, Greencastle, died Wednesday morning at St. Vincent Clay Hospital, Brazil.

Born in Huntingburg, he was the son of Tonny Walker and Frances Louise (Schmeltkope) Cox.

He attended Greencastle High School and served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1973. He also worked 20 years at the Plainfield Correctional Facility, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Moose Lodge 1592, VFW, American Legion, Eagles Lodge, and Elks Lodge, all in Greencastle.

He married Karen Deane Bennington on July 12, 1964. She survives.

Also surviving are four sons, Andy Cox and wife Susanne, Fillmore, Anthony Cox, VanBibber, Aaron Cox and wife Wendy, Reelsville, and Alex Cox and wife Dusty A., Greencastle; 11 brothers and sisters, Sue Hammond and husband Ed, Greencastle, Donald Cox and wife Verdia, Chesapeake, Va., Marvin Cox and wife Wilma, Cloverdale, Charmain Chew and husband Steve, Greencastle, Tonny Cox Jr. and wife Beverly, Fillmore, Lynn Lancaster and husband Roy, Greencastle, Tawny Dowdy, Danville, George Cox, Mt. Meridian, William Cox and wife Linda, Mt. Meridian, Kay Porter and husband Larry, Greencastle, and Derrick Cox and wife Teresa, Greencastle; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Joan Wahl and Clara Lemon.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home, Greencastle, with Pastor Tim Tesmer officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday.
