Cougars drop contest to Warriors

MARSHALL -- The North Putnam High School boys' basketball team dropped to 3-3 on the season with a loss to Turkey Run on the road Friday.

The Warriors defeated the Cougars, 59-43, to improve to 8-2.

North Putnam was led by Jake Mullis, who scored 16 points on seven field goals and a 1-of-3 performance at the free throw stripe.

Mullis was the only Cougars player to score in double figures in Friday's game.

Tyler Trent scored five points for NPHS, and Brayden Dahlstrom was held to only two points.

The Warriors were led by Ethan Newnum, who scored 16 points. Teammate Marco Zanandrea scored 12, and Justin Davies scored 11.

North Putnam trailed from the start, falling behind 15-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Cougars headed into the halftime break trailing, 27-15.

The Cougars were bested by the Warriors, 22-14, in the third quarter before finally winning a quarter, outscoring Turkey Run 14-10 in the fourth.

Turkey Run connected on two three-pointers Friday while the Cougars failed to hit a three.

The Warriors also held the edge at the free throw line, shooting 9-of-15 while North Putnam shot just 5-of-9.

In the junior varsity contest, the Warriors defeated North Putnam, 35-28.

North Putnam will be in action again today at Western Boone with a scheduled junior varsity start of 6:30 p.m., and the varsity squad beginning at 8 p.m.
