Danville too much for Tiger Cubs

Monday, January 15, 2007

The Greencastle High School boy's varsity basketball team hoped to ride some momentum to a second victory on Saturday night, when they hosted the Danville Warriors.

However, the Warriors had other ideas handing Greencastle a loss 66-53.

The first quarter saw both teams offense lighting things up behind some good play on some fast breaks, and some great passing by Michael Richardson. Greencastle was 9-of-12 shooting putting up 20 points led by Brennan Burks with nine points in the first Quarter. Danville was 8-for-13 putting up 16 points led by Nate Ridgon with eight for the Warriors.

The second quarter was not as hot for the Tiger Cubs as there shooting went cold and they turned the ball over several times caused by some tough defensive pressure put on by the Warriors.

The Tiger Cubs only shot 4-of-15 in the quarter and scored nine points. Danville took the lead for the first time in the game with 2:10 seconds to go in the second quarter at 28-27 and would not look back the rest of the game going into half with a slim lead at 30-29

The third quarter saw the teams staying pretty close until the 3:15 mark where Danville went on an 18-point run scoring a total of 26 points in the 3rd compared to Greencastle's seven.

" I thought when (Erick) Burgeson got the steal and we turned around and turned the ball back over to Danville was the turning point of the game. We just didn't get the shot we wanted and they went on an 18 point run." said Greencastle coach Troy Greenlee. "We had a discussion before the game about not trying to do things we were not capable of doing, We panicked and tried to run with them to make the plays and that is just not what we should do. We have to do a better job of answering runs and play more in control."

After blowing the game open in the third, the Tiger Cubs tried to answer in the final period by scoring 17 points but it wasn't enough as Danville scored 10 points of there own to take the victory 66-53.

In junior varsity action, Greencastle fell, 43-34.
