BAINBRIDGE -- Saturday afternoon found county rivals Greencastle and Cloverdale, going head-to-head in the championship round of the Putnam County Junior Varsity Tournament at North Putnam, with the Tiger Cubs coming out on top, 33-27.

In the opening games of the tournament, the Tiger Cubs defeated South Putnam, 27-19, while Cloverdale showed host North Putnam the door, 38-30, to bring about the midday showdown.

The Clovers started the game with Michael Glassburn popping a three-pointer but Greencastle responded on their next trip down floor, as Justin Bartrum scored to bring the score to 3-2.

Cloverdale built a four-point lead after Brandon Moon scored a bucket, then stole the ball and took it in for the score, to make it 9-5 in favor of the Clovers.

The Tiger Cubs trailed the entire quarter but brought it to within one as the quarter expired when Bartrum hit a shot at the buzzer.

Greencastle grabbed its first lead of the contest, when Bartrum again drove in for a shot, making it 16-15. He was followed up by Bo Walker who scored inside.

Cloverdale saw itself against the ropes and started to fight back, but a rushed technical foul call against the Clovers' stalled the surge. Cloverdale got on track again, as Glassburn scored the final five points of the half to give the Clovers the lead, 20-18.

The Clovers marched back onto the court, looking to take advantage of the momentum it built at the end of the first half, but soon found themselves overcome but a invigorated Greencastle squad.

Greencastle came out and scored 11 points in the quarter with Kyle Nobles started and ended the scoring. Along with Nobles, Bartrum and Wade Huber scored for the Tiger Cubs. The Tiger Cub defense held the Clovers scoreless, which brought visible frustration from a usually reserved Cloverdale coach James Wade.

Wade lit a fire under his squad, and it responded.

Robbie Randall scored the opening bucket of the final quarter. Glassburn connected on two free throws and Chad Cummings hit a three-pointer to bring the Clovers close, but Greencastle stood tall and withstood the charge.

Walker was clutch for the Tiger Cubs scoring four points with less than a minute to go, to help lift Greencastle to the win, 33-27.

"It was a great team effort," coach Jeff Miller said following the contest. "We had seven kids that pulled together and did a good job, they played hard all day."

Greencastle had faced all participating schools and defeated them previously in the season, so they knew the pressure was on them. Miller noted a total team effort was key to the teams success.

"Everyone who got in there contributed and that's all you can ask from a championship team," he said.

Greencastle will host Northview at 6:30 p.m., while Cloverdale will travel to face Edgewood at 6 p.m. Tuesday. North Putnam will travel to Tri-West Tuesday at 6 p.m. and South Putnam will travel to Owen Valley Friday at 6:30 p.m.
