Haltom continues to excel at Wabash

The Wabash College Little Giants are still going strong in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, thanks to the help of former Cloverdale boys' basketball standout Chase Haltom.

The freshman played 26 minutes Tuesday, scoring 17 points to help lead Wabash to a win over Allegheny College, 87-84. Wabash (11-15) will face Wooster in the semifinals of the tourney on Friday at 7:45 p.m. The championship is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Wabash is the fifth seed in the tourney while Wooster is the top seed. Wooster knocked off Earlham, 94-76, to advance to the semifinals.

Also left in the tourney are Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg.

Haltom was 6-for-10 from the field against Allegheny Tuesday, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. he also tallied three assists in the win.

Wabash was paced by Andrew Zimmer's 21 points while Aaron Brock tallied 20.

Haltom has played a key role for the Little Giants this season.

He is second on the team in scoring this year with an average of 10.2 points per game, having scored 266 points in 26 games.

Haltom has only started 13 games this seasn for Wabash, but is averaging 24.2 minutes per game.

For the year, he has conntected on 87-of-221 shots, good enough for 39 percent. In addition, Haltom is shooting 40 percent from three-point range, hitting 53-of-133 treys. He is 39-for-50 from the charity stripe (78 percent).

Haltom is averaging 2.3 rebounds per game with a total of 61 while also dishing out 42 assists, good enough for an average of 1.6 per contest. He has also made 18 steals this year.

Haltom tallied a game-high of 23 points against Allegheny on Jan. 6 and has led the Little Giants in scoring four times in his first collegiate season.

Currently, Haltom ranks second on the squad in free throw percentage, scoring, assists and total field goal attempts. He leads the team in three-pointers attemped and hit.

While at Cloverdale, Haltom was a four-year starter. He finished his career with 1,684 points to become Cloverdale's all-time leading scorer, eclipsing Rick Ford's former total by 298 points. Ford -- a 1968 Cloverdale graduate -- scored 1,386 points in his career.

Haltom currently ranks third on the all-time Putnam County list, trailing only 1960 Bainbridge graduate Jeff Blue (1,798 points) and 1966 Fillmore graduate Wayne Bright (1,766 points).
